I've been at the same yard now for about four months and it is becoming unbearable. I am actually moving up North permanently in two months so I am actively looking for another yard but I am going to have to deal with this for two months.

The biggest problem for me at the moment is that I am allowed absolutely no turnout at all. The YO's own horses and the schoolies get out in the fields during the day, however, mine is only allowed out in one of the schools to have a run about for half an hour (max. as there is always a lesson on) I've taken this up with the YO and the only response is that my horse will damage the fields too much as he is much bigger than the rest ... ??? So, he never really gets any contact with any other horses as he is always out alone, then back in the stable :(

The YO is constantly picking at me, telling me i'm doing everything wrong and is just a general b!tch and moaner. Now this I can deal with, however, whenever she goes near my horse he either shies away or tries to bite her (he is an absolute gent and has NEVER behaved like this with anyone.) So i'm so so worried about how she is treating him when i'm not there. I've even thought about setting up a camera in my stable but i'd have no idea how to go about it!!! :(

I'm at my wits end, I just don't know what to do. There are no other yards that I can move to, and I am moving in 2 months anyway, I just don't know how to cope in the meantime!

I'm down there as much as humanly possible, just to see him/ muck/ and/ or ride, but I also work full time. I've had a friend go down to check on him some days but she is reluctant to go back as the YO has been absolutely vile to her.

Sorry for the rant. Has anyone been in a situation like this? Any advice would be hugely appreciated as i'm just constantly worrying about him :(

Wow your YO sounds like a right *insert rude word of choice*

If there are no other yards you can move to before your permanent move then I suppose you are either stuck with it until you do move permanently or try to find somewhere 'up North' now - either temporary grass livery or full livery until you move as well?

Whereabouts in the North are you moving to - people on here may know of something :)

Are you sure there are no other yards fields? Perhaps you could share a location and people may be able to suggest places as lots of yards are word of mouth/ who you know.

I wouldn't be happy with the complete lack of turnout and if I was in this situation I would send my horse away to a retirement livery, you can go further away as they do the daily checks so you don't need to turn up and just treat it as a nice field holiday for him for 2 months and you can concenrate on fiding a nice new yard for when you move.

Leave. I don't think I'd be putting up with this for another 2 minutes, never mind 2 months. Can you find somewhere, even a field, for him for a few weeks while you sort out his new home oop North?

Hello, thanks for the reply.

Agh I know, i've encountered 'difficult' YO's before as i'm sure we all have. But this one is just beyond belief.

Full livery could be an option, i've kind of 'half moved' i'm just up and down constantly sorting everything out! I'd just be a bit nervous leaving him somewhere that I didn't know and couldn't check on him daily. But thank you i'll look in to it.

It's actually up in Scotland - I have put a post on the Scotland forum and had a few suggestions of places to check out so that's my plan for the weekend! Just wish I could get him out now.

I know you say that you will be moving away in a couple of months but if you can find a temporary home for the next couple of months then do it. Life's too short to put up with a nasty YO & your horse's personality is changing possible due to abuse by the YO. You don't want that continuing because if your horse's personality changes it may be difficult to get him back right. Take steps to find somewhere else pronto.

post on a regional forum as to where you are now ... someone on here might know of somewhere ... even if it's grass livery with no stable - weather is on your side now.

I would be too worried about my horse to leave him there for another two months, plus why give your money to this horrible yard owner :(

I've had issues with a YO in the past. Sadly they think its okay to rant and shout at the slightest thing, and talk to you like you are something stuck on the bottom of their shoe. In my eyes as soon as they start doing that you know its time to start looking around and seeing if there is anything else that might be suitable in the area! It actually makes me ill, many a time I have driven to the yard in absolute dread. I am really good at hiding how I feel underneath and put on a good act and will be polite and have conversation with them but underneath I am actually heartbroken about the way I have been spoken to, although I try not to let them see that.

You need to get the turn out sorted out with your horse hun. Sounds like she is jealous of him and doesn't have his best interests at heart otherwise she would not be treating him how she is. Does the YO have any reason to think that your horse would damage the fields? Are you on DIY and the other liveries on full livery and therefore she is favouring them over you?

I think in your situation I'd be moving him to Scotland as soon as you possibly can - if you can get a livery yard recommended that will do full or heavily assisted livery for you until you make the move yourself - then I'd be getting him moved. Yes it will be a big move and you won't be able to check on him daily but a recommended yard with full livery *should* be fine - I do think that the recommended by word of mouth is important though.

Good luck with your search and I hope you find somewhere for your boy.

The lack of turnout I could potentially live with for a couple of months (given that he's getting a play in a paddock) but the lack of company and him becoming headshy would be a total dealbreaker for me.

There are a fair few places that will do short term holiday turnout/livery round here. I certainly would try my best to find somewhere else for him for the next couple of months.

Thanks applecart, I know it's horrible!

No, that's the thing, she has absolutely no reason for treating me like this as all the liveries are pretty much on the same deal. It could well be jealousy but I just don't know why.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I know you are correct and I need to get out of there asap - I will start looking in to places in Scotland as i'd rather just move him once rather than another intermediate stop. He's getting on a bit so I don't want to upset him by constantly moving.

If anyone has any recommendations i'd be eternally grateful!!

I too would recomend getting out sooner rather than later. We were on what had been a good and fair yard, but it started to go south when our four mares were being moved onto poor grazing, while others with fewer horses were getting more than the lions share of the grass, thus meaning we were feeding hay in summer. We were already looking to buy our own place and this may well have been the motivator, we took them further from home for three months to good grazing and someone doing the morning checks for us, as it was just not worth staying there for the last few months before we could get on to our own land. No point giving your money to someone who won't do the job you need.

2 months is a long time from a horse's point of view. I think a temporary stop gap, although not ideal and more unsettling than just one move to a permanent solution, is the lesser of two evils. Wish you luck with it. I'd be trying to find somewhere to turn him away for a bit, or failing that, if able to, fork out for full livery somewhere reputable if you can find space. Horrible situation, I really feel for you. Def get out if at all possible - don't pay to have your horse caged up and yourself treated like s*** :-(

I would find a stop gap livery even if it's an expensive one , if you can't get him straight to Scotland .
Do you have a friend who might take him in short term ?

could you find somewhere to chuck him out for the few month until you move?
Time of wont hurt him and will de-stress him after this awful yard.

Or worse case, just put up with it, you are moving soon, its ot like to can not see an end.

Yes its unfair but some people are like that and wont change.

Thank you all so much for your advice - I have managed to find somewhere that can take him on full livery as of next week. The yard and owner seem absolutely lovely and i'll have a day to get him settled in before I'm off again - these next two months can't go quick enough!

Now just to arrange transport and tell the current yard owner that i'm leaving early ... :D

I hope it works out for you. I love the hacking at my yard, its such a bonus having quiet roads but if it got to the point I wasn't happy anymore I would look at leaving.

Good news, hope it all goes ok for you :)
Can you claim breach of contract with current YO, just to minimise costs or not worth it?

Thank you - that's the only decent thing about the current yard. Which is a bonus as the schools are always full!

Thanks a lot I really hope so - it can't be any worse surely!!?? Don't think it would be worth it tbh, I just want to cut all ties with the place as quickly as possible!

just a thought since the yo does seem to have interesting ideas about you or your horse or how you do things. it may be worth putting as much of your valuable stuff in your car before you tell her you are going in case it suddenly goes walkies or gets damaged in some way. obviously she could be perfectly reasonable and luckily all the yards I have been at have had no problems like that but sadly there are too many stories now about things happening to peoples belongings after they have handed in their notice.

Good idea, I will be doing that asap. I know, this is the worst yard i've been at by far. And it seemed great when we first arrived!
