Disaster has struck, my poor mare has managed to damage the tendon that runs over the back of her pastern. She has been scanned and has 3 small tears in the tendon but no damage to anything else there. I have been told by several people that this is a difficult injury to get right due to scarring etc. Has anyone got any advice please on the best treatment for her, I realise it will be lots of time off but I have never really experience this particular injury before and want to give her the best chance of being sound again.

I presume your vet has given you advice on rest and re-hab exercise.? My mare had a tear in her DDFT within her hoof. This was diagnosed last Sept via MRI and she had complete box rest for 1 month, had to muck out around her, then 3 x 5min handwalks the month after, then regular handwalking, building it up over 2 months after that. We started ridden work, just walking and again building it up slowly on 5th Feb after another MRI. Shes just gone out in the field (small paddock) on her own today for the first time. Its a slow process and one you cannot rush atall to get better from tendon injuries. If the fibres dont align properly and the scar tissue isnt exercised carefully then it will take a lot longer to heal and wont be as strong.

If you can get a physiotherapist who is able to treat the lesions with LW ultrasound, it has been shown to provide a better quality heal in the tendon. It doesn't accelerate the time frame although reduces adhesions. Leahurst use this as a treatment for a lot of these injuries. Where are you based?
