Hi, would it be stupid to buy a horse with ringbone? only I went to try a haflinger that was good in all ways BUT it was footy, when this was pointed out, the seller said that it was on meds for ringbone! is this a condition that gets worse? or is it controllable? thanks :-)

Walk away, ringbone is a degenerative condition and will only get worse over time. My friends horse has it and can only be ridden with bute on 'good' days. We have tried everything and he is always going to be lame unfortunately.

I nursed my old horse through ringbone for ten years. He was hacking sound with low dose bute and glucosamine for most of it and we had some great times. While i never regret having him - i would never knowingly buy a horse with this condition. There is no cure, no guarantee of soundness from one day to the next and its absolutely heartbreaking when you have to lose an otherwise healthy horse to this condition.

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

My sisters horse has ringbone. He's 16 now, and is only on bute for about 6 weeks at this time of year, and again in the autumn. He gets half a sachet once a day, so hardly buted up to the ears!

He's better if he's kept worked - but we're careful on hard ground, and he doesn't do much roadwork. But, he can and will jump a course of 1m20 on a surface quite happily. He's in light to medium work most of the year, but is fitter over the summer as we can do long hacks and get to the beach etc for fast work.

IMO and IME it really depends on the severity. Yes, it is degenerative, but Tom's is only mild, and we've proved that with management its possible to keep him going and in comfort. If, however, its severe already and the mare is only young then I would indeed walk away.

hope the horse search goes well for you whatever you decide.
