My friend has a TB , ex racer who is 21 years old (going on 5, lol)

Last year he was diagnosed with arthritis in his fetlock. This has been kept at bay for a year with Cortavet HA. However, for some reason (strange at this time of year) he has just had a reoccurrance which isn't shifting.

He's been up to the vets this afternoon & they have given a few options for treatment.

1) Is intramuscular injections of Adequan. (He could inject the joint but felt that at his age, it might be good to get a dose that reaches all areas.)

2) Is an intravenous injection of something called 'Hyoxiate' Which I have never heard of - I am assuming it is a brand name for a type of hyaluronic acid or such like?

Does anyone have any experience of this type of treatment & any advice they can give? We are leaning towards option one but would be good to know people's experiences.

Thankies

Do you really want to start injecting the horse? I definatly would not inject into the joint - far to dangerous for my likeing. How is he on a low dose of bute or danillion. Must admit my old lady has arthritis in most of here leg joints and she has had treatment after treatment and nothing has really helped (apart from the bank balance at the Vets). I have just spent nearly £300 quid on cartrophen - injections into the muscle. Have had to face up to the cold light of day - I cannot stop her ageing and i personally think i have been a bit of a cash cow for the vets as i have gone down every route they have suggested and nothing has really helped. She is on one danillion a day and is given gentle excercise 3 to 4 times a week (well it is supposed to be gentle excercise - but try telling her that). Dont forget that arthritis is quite bad when it is damp and although we are supposed to be in the summer we have had a few really damp days. Is he in our out at night ?

Vet is not suggesting he inject into a joint - even if he was it wouldn't be dangerous since he knows what he is doing. lol

There is always a risk with arthritis that nothing will help but there are some things that are worth a shot. I don't think that vets are trying to make money out of us, really - he's just trying to give us our options.

A low dose of bute has not made him come sound. He is out 24/7

I am sorry that your mare has not recovered, but we DO want to investigate the injections.

Hi I am going through exactly the same thing with my 17year old mare at the minute. She was on bute for a month then had to come off it for a week to see how she was and she started off fine but now she is really limpy again. It is a bit lower down for her, either the coffin or navicular areas, the vet is coming back Thursday to x-ray and has also mentioned the injections. She says that some horses they really help in others they don't have much effect on.. I think I will wait and see what happens Thursday. It is horrible seeing her in pain like she is.. good luck and keep me updated.

Has your vet suggested cartrophen? According to my vet it is the new "wonder drug" for arthritic conditions and is injected into the muscle. I think there is always a risk with injecting into the joint as there is a chance of introducing infection, but I may have been misinformed. I know a friend of my daughter lost her horse after this happened

ETS On re-reading your OP I see your vet was planning on injecting into the muscle anyway, so ignore my comments about joints

How low a dose?

I had Fred on 2 Danillon a day for 8 months - and when it had to be increased I let him go.

If the vet feels that the Adequan can really support him long term, then I'd go for it. However, if the horse is a field ornament I would quite possibly be looking at making some sort of decision on him.

Fred's arthritis was significantly worse in the summer due to the hard ground.

It wasn't hyonate by any chance?
My boy had a hyonate/cortizone injection in his knees...worked very well and I'm now waiting to see how long it lasts.
He has synovitis in both knees by the way.
