Have always had my spangles professionally trimmed but Rosie at 13 and a bit finds it all a bit of an ordeal now, the travelling, being lifted in and out of the bath etc so during this hot weather I thought I might try to trim her myself. I have a set of Wahl trimmers and a set of Liveryman Harmony horse clippers. Would either of these be safe to use on an ESS and if so do I trim with or against the lie of her coat. I am well aware she will not be show standard but I am just thinking of comfort here, taking a bit of the weight off her back and round her bum. she has a very thick coat and is def feeling the heat. Anyone able to give me an idiots guide to a DIY trim:)

Not really very helpful as i'm not trusted to do my spangles (think the hair cut scenario and yellow pages advert!) so dad does ours!

BUT i do think we should have before and after pics!:D:D:D:p

i use my wahl cordless clippers and my Lister Laser horse clippers on my old GSD, works a treat. i just shave everything i can again its just for comfort reason so not too fussed with how it looks

What size blades do you have?

Always brush the dog out and give a good scrub in the bath:D towel dry and then another another comb through, then dry thoroughly, with a DIY jobbies:rolleyes::rolleyes: you could let her dry off naturally or dry her with the dryer.

Go with the hair, starting from the head straight down the middle of the back and gradually over the sides, then front and back legs, im not sure if you are attempting scissoring:eek::D but if you shave her ears you will need to trim the ends for a nice rounded and non straggly look, same with legs, there will be stray clumps of hair when the clippers cannot glide in/cover, inc feet, obs takes care when scissoring.

Puccini gives a more detailed and patient instruction, she may be along soon.

step 1 - get spangle

step 2 - get horse clippers

step 3 - clip all possible hair off spangle

done :D

I'd like to elaborate (not based on my own experiences at all) :D -

Step 1: Call spangle

Step 2: Go to find spangle

Step 3: Locate spangle upside down in dead creature

Step 4: Bath spangle - allow plenty time for swearing and death stares

Step 5: Hose self down as self is now covered in afore-mentioned minging dead creature

Step 6: Retrieve clean dry spangle from your (now) wet and minging bed

Step 7: Hog-tie spangle

Step 8: Switch on clippers

Step 9: Attempt to restrain wriggling spangle with help of OH

Step 10: Clipper slippage results in slight mohawk in OH

Step 11: Placate OH as best you can - beer helps

Step 12: Call barber

Step 13: Give in and call dog groomer :o

do it in stages! to try to eliminate the bad hair day (or weeks) scissor the legs and paws off semi short! scissor the skirt off to desired lenghth, clip ears off with little clippers going with the growth of hair, scissor around the edge of ear to get shape. then start from base of skull and clip with the hair towards tail and down sides to join trimmed skirt. best done with little clippers with a comb attachment (horse clippers will skin the dog and take long time to look right_) clean well brushed coats trim and clip the best! you can always take a bit more off but you cant stick it back on!

NN, thanks for that, just spat tea over my keyboard so now have that to deal with as well:) To all of you who gave sensible answers, thanks for the advice, am going to have a go after OH has watched qualifying at Silverstone. To the rest of you, very funny :) you are obviously all spangle owners who are wise to their little foibles regarding looking clean and tidy!! Rosie may be an old lady now but she has no intention of growing old gracefully!!

PS I may post pics later, depending on how embarrassed I am.

It takes 2. One to hold the spaniel and one to clip. The spaniel will go all hard and unflexible as you clip and may only present one side to be clipped as the other side presses hard into the kitchen cupboard.

The spaniel is very happy and runs round a lot when you have finished.

Sorry guys, showed the OH all the replies and he wimped out on me. The IWS is going to the pro groomer on Tuesday so Ive got to take my clippers with me and ask her if they are OK to use before I am allowed to attack, sorry, trim Rose. I just dont think he trusts me and doesnt want our poor old girl to look like a dodgy old punk!! (no offence to any old punks out there) On a serious note, dont suppose anyone could recommend a good mobile groomer in Milton Keynes area can they? Rose loves to be groomed, its just the whole travelling and being away from home she finds a bit too much these days.
