Initially, 3 weeks ago today when one appeared I thought it was nettle rash or milk warts and posted on here, and got lots of lovely helpful responses that I shouldnt ring them, just leave them for a little while and see if they spread or dropped off. Well, nothing happened for a while, but then they have spread very quickly over 10 days. Camrosa Ointment did nothing (applied from day 1) so last week I called out our local vets.

I was extremely disappointed with the vet who attended, who says she has no idea what it is and whether or not to treat with Liverpool cream or take a sample of one and have it analysed. She called back 2 days later to ask if I could take pics in to the practise for colleagues to see, in order to get a diagnosis. So, here are the pics I will be taking in this morning.

What do you think, have you seen this before? Thanks.

Hi twinkletoes,

they look typical of warts, which are caused by a papillomavirus and are common in young horses. Don't worry too much about them, the are unsightly but will generally spontaneously regress, but it can take some tiime

They look exactly like the lumps my friends yearling had when we viewed him. They went within a couple of months.
Apparently they are common as tangotime says and look worse than they are.
He has no scars or marks from them.

Ditto what others have said.Look exactly like my 16month old he has a few clusters of them.Friends have used Thuja cream /tablets but wether they helped or they would have just gone anyway I don't know.
I've left my lads but monitoring one on his face as close to eye.

As others have said just leave them alone and they'll disappear it's a young horse thing. Can't believe your vet couldn't tell you what they were, I wouldn't have much faith in them for any other ailments.

Grass warts, lovely. Equine vet from now on, and as others have said, you really don't need to worry about them and can leave them alone. They'll drop off when they're ready.

As above they are simple viral warts, all 3 of last years babies had them last winter, they will take a few months to disappear but they will disappear without anything on them, I did not treat mine at all, they are just unsightly. The last one to get them got her 1st in January and the last one went in July!

You can use homeopathic treatments, and years ago we use to use milkweed sap on the youngsters warts, but I would just let them take their course. Liverpool cream is strong stuff and expensive and it is not designed for these!
