Advice please what could be wrong ulcers again? :(

My horse has been treated for ulcers he had upto grade 4 so treatment was gastrogard he was re scoped two weeks ago which was clear and has been weaned to a quatre of a dose up untill today it finished, however the grumpyness is back more so when jumping and also in the stable he will jump the fences but inbetween hes so grumpy and tonight he was rearing and rearing which is unlike him unless he is in pain. So spoke to the gastro specailist tonight and he said hes got to go on a full dose again for a week and see what happens, what else could it be i know at the beginning they hoped it wasnt something secondary causing the ulcers. What other digestive problems can horses suffer from?? on the flat hes ok when jumping whatever it is is causing him pain. His back and everything is fine, it just seems to be gastric trouble again. Hes on a totally high fibre diet.

How much field turnout does your horse get? I recently took my mare to the vet for scoping for gastric ulcers. It turned out she has a couple of grade 1/2 ones. My vet said that the best thing is to turn them away into a field for 24/7 turnout for a month and they normally sort themselves out....
 
Have you put your gelding on any suppliments for when she comes off the GG???? My mare had grade 3/4 ulcers and was scoped clear in April and Ive managed to keep them away fingers crossed, but she is on a fun mix of suppliments which seem to work well!
 
hes on ready mash, hi fi lite, high fibre cubes, i also give him brewers yeast and slippery elm and seaweed, we have got him coligone for when he comes of the gastor which we did start tonight but as hes got to go back on to a full dose of gastro he said to leave the coligone for now
 
Mine is on feedmark Ulcer calm, topped up with extra Lethicin from puritans pride (american company), I cant recoment this combination enough, reasearch shows that you the lethicin turns the stomach acid into a gloopyer substance which then cant splash the stomach, I started my mare on the suppliments before she came off GG. Does your horse have adlib hay???
 
My yard owners horse suffered really bad from ulcers, she has had terrible problems in the past but now has him on some new ulcer stuff and touch wood hes been sooo much better.
Im sure she would be happy to have a chat with you if you wanted and share her experiences.
He had low calcium levels which caused him to be very stressy which caused the ulcers, she now got the calcium sorted and the ulcer problem seems to be fine, hes a different horse...
 
yes it wouldnt hurt, he used to be terrible, he was spooky to ride and to bring in from the field, he used to stand in his stable and just stare at nothing, never really relaxed fully,
now hes a real cool dude :-) and hes eating for England!!!! :-/
 
It could well be that the ulcers are secondary. They were in my horse who has now been diagnosed with a chronic SI dysfunction. We did a pain trial using Danilon and his temperament changed so pain was proven. I don't know where you are in the country but there is a brilliant rehab/holistic vet who is also trained in acupunture and an osteopath who runs a rehab clinic outside Newmarket. She is very reasonably priced and gives every horse a full assessment to source an problem, also a wealth of knowledge on gut health and nutrition. Below is her website, good luck!

hope your horse is ok now. Before we found out nobby had the ulcers we trialed him on danilon for couple of weeks but its didnt help, either the ulcers have come back or he has another problem in the digestive system just worrys me iv never had problems with ulcers before with him before this

Sorry to hear this - as soon as you're nearing the end of the Gastrogard - start feeding the full loading amount of Coligone Liquid - that way the stomach will continue to be guarded against the gastric acid - there's no reason why the Coligone can't be used at the same time as Gastrogard though as they work in completely different ways. Thank you i think the reason was is because they wanted to see if it was ulcers thats returned to see if the gastro would help if it didnt then they know its another problem.

Danilon won't help ulcers. - my horse was treated for ulcers first then when he was still girthy and grumpy we did the Danilon trial which proved a further problem. If you did it before the ulcer treatment it would prove nothing. The only way to test for ulcers cheaply and quickly is to give a cup of limestone flour twice a day (or Rantacidine tablets x 7) and feed chaff immediately before riding and if horse is improved you are likely dealing with ulcers - this trial will not cure them.
Donna put my horse on a 2 weeks on then 2 weeks off then 2 weeks on course of Green Clay and a months worth of Chlorella for his hind gut health. She said that the hindgut bacteria is compromised by Gastrogard because it shuts down the acid pumps and lets undigested food pass through the hind gut, which cause the posionous lactic acid to be produced in response killing the gut bacteria. The Green Clay and Chlorella treatment restores the gut bacteria after a treatment with Gastrogard. Also your horse could have hind gut ulcers which are exceedingly hard to treat and do not respond to Gastrogard. As another poster said Coligone is very good too as a continuous preventative supplement.
Have you changed his diet? My horse is only fed hay and Allen & Page cereal and sugar intolerant feed, carob and a cup of linseed, devil's claw. He always has access to grass or hay.

My horse is on a very long rehab course for his SI dysfunction, we will give him every opportunity to get better, but prognosis is not fab, thanks.

yes i know danilon wont help with ulcers we didnt know it was ulcers before so before he was diagnosed the vet wanted to rule out pain elsewhere then when he didnt respond to the danilon we scoped him to find it was ulcers,

Sorry yes what I was trying to say is that isn't it worth a Danilon trial now to prove it's not pain then? That's what we did. Our horse was rearing and bucking and very hard to handle.

I meant to add our boy is put now 24/7 and has been since January. He gets stressed being stabled.
 
He was first scoped in may so he went straight on the treatment and diet change he has been on gastrogard ever since, his grumpiness went all i could do was flat work up untill 2 weekends ago as iv been having my new jump saddle made, so he got back to normal on the flat and he was very happy up untill his 2nd scope which was 2 weeks ago and it showed he was clear on the ulcers, so literally i got my jump saddle the next day and that was the first time back jumping him for a few months our last bsja comp was in april. He just not himself atall back jumping hes been honest and still jumped the fences but inbetween he will pin his ears flat back and crank his neck and yesterday he was just awful he got grumpy then something was obviously huriting him he kept rearing and that not like my horse unless something is up he was not happy atall

Oh dear that sounds like pain. Could you get a physio to check his back? My horses physio was great - she measured his hind muscles and the difference on the injured side was phenomenal. His SI injury really showed via the different checks she made. Of course my horse's injury/dysfunction is chronic as we have now established so it had affected him for a long time, hence the big difference in measurements. Yours sounds like a recent injury. Hes had his back done and all is fine, hes fine on the flat so if its his back im sure he would do the same, something is happening in his digestive system that when jummping makes it worse hes just not at all comfotable and deffo not himself
