advice please. what would you do? sad news

Hope you can get the foal out and amiracel occur for your mare.

Over many years of breeding, I have had one foal where we had to put the dam down when foal was 6 weeks old - she had a tendon slipped off hock and like you we knew through the latter stages of the pregnancy that it was a damage limitation exercise and we had to keep the mare alive longer than we might have wished in order to get foal up and running. By 6 weeks foal was eating milk pellets and we managed to rear it like that. The filly matured to be a very successful show jumper.

My other experience was 2 years ago when I lost a mare with a 6 day old foal at foot. I can only recommend the services of Newmarket Foster Mare company - they were brilliant and not only produced a foster mare in my hour of need but also a bonding service which as I knew nothing about it was a real boon. Foal and foster mare returned to me 3 days after bonding and it was as if the foster was the foal's real dam. Not cheap but a really professional service. Foal is just rising 2 years old and is currently about 16.1hands!!

You have a real dilemma and there is no right answer - you just have to do what you feel is right at the moment in time. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your situation very sad, it does sound like the muscle could be damaged due to the pregnancy, I would look into it further see if you can find out if it is possible, I really hope it is for the foal and your sake, hand rearing is not easy.

hi. just a quick update and more opinions needed!

she is fine in herself is getting up and down fine by herself, well not fine but ok!

vet is coming back out during the week for another look.

i did some heat therapy and vigorous brushing today. when the heat was on and after id brushed for a few minutes, there was a lot of twitching going on in a few spots around the bad area? she was also really fidgeting with that bad leg? now....if the nerves were dead and the area was numb (vet said it would be) how come the twitching and fidgeting?

thanks everyone xx

Poor wee mare.

I think OP you must be quite near me since you use Catriona, who is fantastic btw, have you thought about getting a different vet practice out? I use Arthur Kydd, him and his brother John are really practical, no nonsense horse vets, they both work happily with Catriona. If you feel like that might be an option pm me and I'll pass on his number.

Sending positive vibes to you and your mare.

Agree with the above...Catriona is brill. I've not used A and J Kydd but heard good things about them.

Positive vibes from me also x

Oh right, yep very unusual to see Arthur stumped! I've never used them myself, but a friend of mine who is incredibly picky, really rates Abbey vets, I think they are based near/in Forfar. I think you can find their details on the web.

Edit to add, they would be my 2nd choice if I couldn't get Arthur in an emergency.

From my own experience of nerve issues ( i have a nerve disorder), It can go 'dead' so i feel nothing but then goes numb to pins and needles which is very itchy but can also hurt.
