Advice please. What would you do?

I work weekends at a small private yard. There is a male groom who works through the week.

We had a bedding delivery to-day. Normally, I would be able to unload it by myself without a problem.

Un-fortunelatly, I fell down the yard steps yesterday morning. They are stone so I am covered in bruises and I have hurt my shoulder.

Becuase of this, I asked the yard owner if the male groom could help unload. She said no. I got half of the bags unloaded before my shoulder started to give out on me. The delivery men had to unload the rest.

I have just got in from A&E. The doctor there said I had torn a muscle and have a lot of brusing in my shoulder. I have a sick note for two weeks but I'm not sure what to do after that. I could work if I had light duties, but the yard owner won't let me do that.

I need the job because money is tight at the moment.

What would you do? (and thank you for reading.)
 
There is such a thing as a 'fit note' these days. When I had my fall my GP gave me one that said that I could do light duties, but couldn't lift.

If you had the fall on the yard, make sure that you have put it in the accident book.

Yes, that is what I have got.

I did put the fall in the accident book- yard owner didn't want me to though. It shocked me because we have got along well so far.
 
If you had the accident at work, and told them you weren't fit to unload the bedding, and they still made you do it they are negligent. Talk to your doctor, explain the situation, and ifpossible get signed off again if still not fit for work. Your employer should have insurance to cover them for accidents at work, and should continue to pay you as normal. If they try to get funny, either call the BHS helpline, or talk to CAB.
 
How are you paid? Unless you are properly self employed then you should get sick pay and she has to take notice of a sick note. I know it can be difficult to stand up for your rights though.

I am not self employed. I get paid through the bank and get a wage slip.

I am finding it hard to stand up to her over this. She is older than me by quite a lot.
 
Hey, this YO needs a severe kick up the backside. bet she was in your position once. Photocopy the sick note, and then give her the original. As an employer she then has a legal responsibility to look after you. If you need any further info, the Citizens Advice Bureau are great - you could drop that in if she starts ranting.

Your boss is trying to take the mick big time. Do you have a parent or friend you can get involved? Having had serious problems after an injury at work, I am now quite touchy on this subject! I do hope she has insurance. She should be ashamed of herself for making you unload things post having an accident.
The fact that she also didn't want you to write it in the accident book is also very suspicious.
 
I think it would be worth getting legal advice. You've had an accident at work and you have legal rights. Also, if you don't rest the injury, it could have long-term implications for your health and fitness.

Please don't let yourself be bullied. You haven't done anything wrong.
