Hello, im a stay at home mum and soon the twins will be going off to school so im deciding what t odo with myself. Im not sure whther to go back to my job in the office at Next or do something with horses. I used to work in a riding school and it seriously put me off working with horses for years as it was so badly run.

Anyway im thinking of maybe advertising myself to look after horses for poeple while they are away working or going on holiday.

Does anyone on here do that? is there any demand for it?

Advice greatl recived.

At the yard where we are the owners will "do" the horses for you while you are away for an extra £5 per day. I imagine most places do something similar? I suppose it might be useful to people who keep their horses at home but I can't think it will be much of a money spinner by the time you take into account the travel and having to go twice a day. God luck though

Only thing id say regarding that is that most people i know would want to see a) qualifications and b) a whole long list of references.

I know if i was going away and i had a choice between putting mine onto full livery somewhere with a reputation, or having someone i dont know looking after them; id choose the full livery option.

If you're put in sole charge of people's horses theres a lot to consider in terms of when things go wrong and people would want to know there horses are in the best possible care (and of course, theres the safety aspect of leaving your horses with someone you dont know)

Tierra you are right plus i would have to be insured right up to the max....might look for something else to do like work part time on a yard or something...

I am in the same position with my youngster (child not horse!) although he is 2 and a bit so just starting nursery, I am going to start my BHS stage 1 to try and get some qualifications behind me. I am also going to get my horse out there and competing andf try and network as much as possible, and get as much experiance with mine and other peoples horses so hopefully when the time comes and he is at school i can at least earn some hay money from my passion! So if you have any good advice about what qualifications to get (part time) please let me know! Good luck!

A woman on my NVQ course looks after other people's horses while her kids are at school and she is doing ok on it - she advertises in the local post office and at the riding school. Make sure you have insurance tho!!!
