Hi,
I am thinking of getting a small dog (westie probably) and just wondered how many people do shift work and if you manage ok? Also any info about the breed would be great as I dont know that much about them just going by what I have heard

Hi...I would suppose it depends on your shift pattern..and whether you choose to rescue an older dog or go for a puppy....do u live alone? What hours?
I work shifts..and I find it better as myself and OH work opposite each other..and I can also take some into work with me....if I have young pups in.

Re..westie....as in the dalmation post...I would not choose a dalmation as a large breed and nor a westie for a small breed...lol

.....In the right hands and not treat like a spoilt pampered pooch...they can be nice little dogs(did I really say that)

Make sure you choose a good breeder...if you are going for a puppy...this type of breed is very commonly produced by puppy mills, as they rank pretty high as a small family dog.

Insurance highly recommended....they commonly suffer skin problems

They do have a reputation for being snappy little feckers...and we get loads in to re-home, with big attitude problems....just treat it as a dog, allow it to use its own legs to walk and impliment some boundaries and be consistent and im sure you will have a lovely well rounded westie...I mean by way of manners not waist line

They are pretty active and feisty little dogs as terriers are....so give plenty of socialisation with other dogs.

There will be westi owners on here that can give u better insight

Brill thanks. I live with my mum but when I move out it will come with me and be my responsibility while I am still at home too. Although mum will be around to help if I am not there for some reason. Just looking into breeds at the moment as dont want anything too big but also not something thats too feeble to get muddy etc at the yard!

Well they are not feeble...quite the opposite when not pampered to within an inch of their lives

atleast you have your mam t help you out whilst still at home...by the time you move out your chosen doggi will be older and in a routine

Yeah I wont be pampering it..in fact it will be at the yard getting dirty and very much being a dog most of the time! Yeah thats what I thought at least she can help while its still a pup

mmm, Westies, my least favourite breed in the world! Maybe it's down to the people that normally own them, but they are seriously stroppy little shites when it comes to doing anything with them that they dont want and they're not afraid of biting to show their displeasure. Aside from all the horrid skin, ear and eye problems that they get. I wouldn't have one. I'm not a huge fan of little dogs, but I really like Border Terriers - they dont have the issues of Westies, they're a good size and they're great for rough and tumble.

CALA, I've wanted to say this for a as long as I've been on HHO: You are a mine for the best advice when it comes to dogs...Obviously so as you have loads of experience with dogs of all breeds, sizes and walks of life ! Without forgetting the amazing challenge of skilfully rehoming all of them...
HHO members like you - there are others ! - are one of the reasons why I love this forum so much

boxers are my main love, but if i had to have a little dog, it would be a BT every time - they're fab and they seem to be really tough - they're not a breed i see in the vets every 5seconds with problems unlike Westies who unfortunately are probably the ones I see the most of!

I work 12hrs shifts and have a JRT. I do however palm him off on my dad when I'm working!!! It works quite well as I only actually work 14 days every 6 weeks. After a night shift I pick him up about 7am and take him to do the horse and walk him, then he sleeps when I do and then dad has him over night. When I'm on day shifts dad lets him out before he goes to work (as I leave about 4:45am), at lunchtime and then after work. I get home about 7pm and take him out for a walk and also up the yard in the summer. The most I do is 4 shifts on the trot, so while he doesn't get as much attention when I'm working, it's more than made up for when I'm off, as then he's with me almost all the time. He know what shift I'm from the time i get up and just falls into sink.
