Advice please

My 8 yo gelding has developed a head wag! He wags his head from side to side in left canter which is really annoying and is being noticed in dressage tests. He is more built up on right side due to a previous injury before I had him, I bought him aged 4, he had no muscle then but a flat butt cheek. He is better in full work but is rather accident prone and between us he tends to have a few months off a year! Thus he loses muscle and needs building up again. he had the works today, teeth, back and feet. Anyone else had anything similar?? Btw hes 17.2hh (ish)

Absolutely no idea but could it be a rider problem? Have you tried getting a different and very experienced rider to ride your boy? Or a bitting issue? Something basic like the bit is all chewed and has developed sharp edges one side? Just guessing really. Sometimes you need to start thinking like a horse to unravel something!

My mate has been riding him for the past 10 wks as I've been off with a crock back. She says its better when she kicks his right hind leg under more. I am stronger on the left as I broke my right knee years ago and I'm also left handed. He almost seems stiff at first and needs to get going then it eases off, if you don't get after him tho its really noticeable. He is in a kk loose ring with the angled lozenge. As recc by my trainer, he goes really nicely in it apart from the head wag on left rein.
I don't know what else to do really, I can't ride him till my back softens off so its quite frustrating.

Did he go like that with you Henners? If not, I'd guess either a "new rider" thing or has he hurt himself recently? I'd opt for a good instructor and some lessons, even with your pal riding and you watching as you could still both learn why he's going like this and how to help him. Sorry I can't be more help H. Maybe some expert riders on the Forum can help?

Hes much better after his teeth & back done. He was ridden yest and today and has qualified for the Trailblazers finals at Stoneliegh in the novice. Really pleased with him, he is much better now.

He has an injury that happened before I bought him. It only becomes apparent when he has had time off. Hopefully he will be kept in full work.
