There is a horse on our yard that has sliced his pastern, we think he put his foot through some sheep wiring

However, there is no swelling whatsoever (hence why I only saw it when went to pick his feet out), and he is totally sound.
He is keeping it very clean himself, he keeps licking it and he is out in the day in the wet grass so it is kept moist.
I have piled on the camrosa, and tonight I syringed it with water to make sure there was no grit in it.

Do I just keep an eye on it or should I call the vet? I dont think you could stitch it because its on the pastern so is constanly opening, and that fact that there is no swelling.

Advice?

pics would be useful - sounds ok if you keep an eye on it and make sure it stays clean. Very hard to stitch and prob too late now anyway. will be slow to heal due to constant movement tho

Might do better to be bandaged to restrict the movement. And perhaps restrict turnout to a small paddock or even box rest for a week to really get the healing going.

Depends how big the wound is, but movement is a big enemy of healing along with infection.

Friends horse sliced her pastern a few years back and the vet let if open and wanted the horse out 24/7. e did give a course of antibiotics and it was flushed twice daily and treated with hydrogel. It did develop some proud flesh but that was later burnt off with copper sulphate (do they still do that??) and it healed without scaring and the horse continued to be shown at county level as a hw hunter.

if its not deep or bleedind and clean i would not bother with the vet clean it with diluted hi bi scrud dry apply would powder witch will help dry it out then put a banadage on it so he can not lick it and keep it dry from the grass!
