My 2yr old filly looks like she has gotten a a kick in the field yesteday. She came in with a little patch of swelling about 2/3 way up her hind cannon. There is a tiny wound, maybe about 0.5cm across and it looks like a graze. I picked part of the scab of and it was clean and pink under, no goeey stuff and very dry.

This morning her leg was slightly swollen from her fetlock upwards, No visible tendon definition but easily felt, only really noticeable from the side and not the front, not really hot, just warm and no pain under pressure.

It was going down steadily when she was turned out this morning and she is totally sound on it.

So what I would like to know is if the swelling is probably just from the impact, or whether she is likely to have a touch of ifection in there?

If it is infected then it looks like she picks these things up easily (I know its probably because she is a youngster), so is it a bad idea to add an immune support supplement at such a young age. I don't want to have to keep loading her with anti biotics every time she gets a scratch.

I will be getting the vet out tomorow if the swelling is worse or doesn't improve sufficiently but thought I would ask here for any ideas.

Thanks for any replies.

It's tiny, I can't take a picture as it's under her hair and to pull the hair away my finger would obscure the photo. I'd say its slightly smaller than 1/2 a 5p piece. I haven't bathed it as it was really dry and looked pretty clean. I picked part of the scab off, it was very well stuck on and underneath it was very pink. I think it has just been a little nick.

The wound itself isn't what is bothering me, it is the swelling which got worse when she stood in over night

Cold hose it for 15minutes twice a day at least. You could put on a sweat and stable bandages then when shes in to keep the swelling down, but keeping it clean (and removing the scabs) and cold hosing it are the most important things to do. Turning out during the day ( as lng as she isnt really lame on it ) will help keep the swelling at bay too.
