My Rotti is 5 and has the start of arthritis's which she has been to the vets about back in the summer.
There is not much they can do, she has it in her elbows, as its got colder she is getting worse.

I have put her bed next to the radiator in which she loves!

Do you know of any supplements I can give to help with Joints? She has Cod Liver Oil at the moment, which does not do much.

Help needed please!

glucosamine is very good. also if shes having cod liver oil she should also get vitamin E as its used to process the oil.

xx

My vets prescribed Synoquin for my dog who had arthritis in her shoulder and it was fab. Otherwise anything with glucosomine, condroitin or MSM is great, as is devils claw for anti-inflammatory and pain relief.
Cortoflex is one of the best non prescriptive supplements on the market - comes in a liquid form for dogs.

I was feeding her Devils claw and the vet said to me to stop giving it her as its not very good for them?

As for Glucosomine, condroitin where do you get that sort of stuff from?

Hey fellow rottie owner

*waves* Rymadil is often prescribed as an anti-inflamatory etc for large dogs with arthritis and other such disorders. Synoquin is also good (we gave this to our pup for the first 18months as a strengthener and preventative). i think there is also a canine version of cortaflex which is highly reccomended. will just do a search on it.
Good luck, she can still live a happy and active life with just a little more help than usual.

My beloved Holly (sadly died in July and also a Rotty) had arthritis in her toes and was quite lame at times. My vet prescrobed Synoquin and also Metacam which is a painkiller. She was hugely improved after taking these although they take a while to kick in. By the way don't panic the arthritis was not the reason we lost her!!. Hope your girlie feels better soon.

I am sorry to hear she is getting stiff, our rottie bitch is the same age and I have noticed that she has slowed down a little. Hope you find a suitable product for her.

I haven't heard contra-indications about devils claw for dogs but if your vets advises against it then go with their advice.
All the other stuff is easy enough to find on internet - google or ebay.
My mums elderly JR is on Rimadyl and Metacam which is also good, although I believe Metacam is to slow down brain ageing process not a pain reliever.

'Metacam is to slow down brain ageing process not a pain reliever. '
where did you get that from?
My vets use it as standard pain relief in general!
Plus my lab can hardly walk without, but with it she is fine!

Its very possible (actually highly likely) that mum has got this wrong as she can be a bit dizzy - I was merely posting what I thought was the right answer. Quoting just one piece of my reply makes it look like a statement but I did say 'I believe'.
Clearly I am wrong!!

sorry, just highllighted the general gist!
Think she may have got it wrong, as is a definite painkiller, which my lab has been prescribed (at 5yrs) for her arthritis in all 4 legs.
What has your vet suggested?

Metacam is very good, the vet should be able to prescribe it. My OH dads retriver who is about 11 is on it. Went from being at deaths door to running up and down the stairs.

Hope that helps.

Maybe also cod liver / vegatable oil and / or green muscle extract.

Synoquin but your dog will need a loading dose then a reduction and the effects will be noticable after a fair while. I would consult your vet about arthritis clinics.
Weight loss programmes if needed, exercise routines.
A comfy bed ( sounds obvious but possibly deeper padding) Cartrophen injections and acupuncture. All these things have been used with great success on our own dog.
Best of luck.

Seven Seas cod liver oil and glucosamine capsules. They contain 250mg glucosamine, which may not be a large enough dose for a large dog - ask your vet. We had our JRT on these for years after she started to seize up and they worked miracles.

I used to feed my greyhound Seraquin in tablet form, it was easy as she would eat the tablets from my hand so I knew she had had them

METACAM!!! IS A FANTASTIC MEDICINE FOR ARTHERITIS, ITS PURPOSE IS TO ALLEVIATE INFLAMATION AND PAIN IN ACUTE AND CHRONIC MUSCULAR SKELETAL DISORDERS!!! and as artheritis is inflamation of the joints this is a great remedy for your dogs problem!!!! SPEAK TO YOUR VET.

Speak to your vet about hydrotherapy for your dog. It is very good for things like this and helps dog to maintain muscle tone and fitness without pressure on joints. My dog goes regularly as he has spinal probs and he is fit as a fiddle. I keep taking him now because he loves it!! If you want I can PM you one near Basingstoke but may be too far.
