well i was wondering how i could get my horse round , i have done it before on a different horse but when i do it on him he just puts his head up ! and also how could i keep up my horses stamina without kicking alot ? i use the whip but its a short one so i have to take it off my reins and sometimes i loose the rhythm! any advice ? x  :o

Awww gaaawd. Another one! :p ;)

Okay, in theory, if the horse is working correctly, they should work in a rounded, soft outline. Remember, it's not just the head that drops and rounds, it's the entire body bending correctly and working properly through the quarters and back.

So, what you need to aim for is a forward stride, making sure the horse is nice and supple, bending correctly around your leg and working nicely. So, push forward with your leg, keeping your hands still and firm, yet soft. Making sense? Basically, your hands should be able to give and take and you should be able to feel the horses mouth on the other end - but don't pull as the horse will go backwards instead of forwards! It's a tricky balance!

So as you're working forwards, introduce little bends by using your half halts, asking for flexion at the poll, this is what creates that nice outline at the front. As he drops his head, he should work through his back. Remember, you want his energy to come from his back end!! Remember how me and Sarah used to say 'Like a bouncy ball!'? This is what we mean. You need all the energy contained, so no rushing, just gently released in a forward movement from his behind. Remember, give plenty of breaks because working in an outline for an hour straight is tiring!! And DON'T saw on the reins, and DON'T just think because his head is dropped it's a correct outline, he won't be working properly and you won't get the all important dressage scores ;) :p

So, make sure he is moving off your leg, nicely forward in a contained movement, and make sure your hands are soft and firm, asking for a small amount of flexion at the poll to finish off the outline, meaning he his bending correctly around your leg. Good luck! :) xx

umm, who are you talking about ??

well just twiddle on the reins and press with your legs but dont hold the reins make sure when they show you they want to go round that you give the reins back, sarah told me the other day on dylan that i have to squeeze one rein and when he turns his head and lowers it to give him the rein and squeeze the other rein, not sure if its right but that is just what my instructor told me to do ! :)

this advice will be helpful to me aswell :D

keeper

what i do ... i keep him moving forward and lengthening his strides twiddling my hand keeping contact with his mouth but not pullin but when i go up into canter/trot i lose it ! thanks for the advice imo ! and emilie thats what i do too if i'm not riding keeper cos when i did it on him he reversed :S lol ! ahha we are so in sync :P x
