Hi everyone, one of my GSDs is now 13 years and we love her dearly but over the past few months she has found it increasingly more difficult to get up. She now refuses to walk down the field and generally looks miserable. I nearly cried today when she couldn't get up, had to help her to stand and even then she was staggering sideways with no control over her backend. Its heartbreaking to watch her. When do you say "enough is enough"??

I have had this with far too many of mine, hard as it is when I feel their quality of life has deteriorated I make the decision to let them go. Only you can make that decision for your girl, but if she was mine I think I would feel it is time. I am so sorry.

13 years is a fantastic life. If only mine had lived so long :(

You've obviously done the best for her so far and from what you've said, I would say she's now finding things hard. So sorry x

Thanks everyone, I thought a decision had been made last night but today she is up and about and looks ok. Its sooooo very very hard. Think I may have a trip to the vets and see what he says, maybe some painkillers/anti-imflamatorys may help. I know its only a matter of time and keep asking myself......."am I thinking about MY feelings or hers"??
She has been an excellent friend and companion over the years...

Hi there,
Im no dog expert but was in the same stuation a few weeks ago. We had 13 year old lab with epilepsy who kept failing then picking himself up again it was heart wrenching. We eventually deciced that the next bad spell we would have him pts which we did. Although it was really sad it was the right thing to do and now we have just happy memories. You will know yourself when it is time.

I think it's time if she can't get up on her own. You do have to think of her and not your feelings, as you said-super hard thing to do but quality of life is always my yard stick. If the quality of life for the animal has deteriorated, then it's time. :(

We decided last week that it was time and there was no point in pushing the poor boy any further. He was only 7 but there was no point in watching him struggle with no hope of recovery.
