Any advice please, my 8 year old GSD is on supplements for her achey bones but she seems to be getting quite stiff more frequently :-( what could I give as a painkiller when it is esp bad or is it better to put her on something constantly ?

I'm lucky in that I've never really had an issue like this with mine so I won't pretend to be an expert...if you do a search for keywords, like 'joint, pain, treatment, supplement, dog' in the search bar you'll find plenty of posts about supplements/treatment long term that others have used.

Have a good chat with your vet, too.

If it is getting increasingly bad I would say she would need something full time and there are plenty on here managing joint issues with medication.

Was actually going to recommend you came on here, when I saw your FB post!

All the best you to you and your girl x

Thanks CC

She is on Devils Claw and glucosamine but I was thinking more in terms of a pain killer when she is stiff. She is def slowing up and will choose to stay at the stables rather hack out.

I think having the JRT in the past year hasn't helped as when they played she would do such sharp turns to turn away with the ball. I stopped the ball play a few months ago when I 1st noticed a slight stiffness.

Vet vit has been recommnended so I will try her on that and monitor her and see if I need to take her to the vets.

I had her hip scored as a pup and she her score was very low. Poor thing has never been to the vets other than for her injections. I'll have to dig out her pet insurance details.

If I were you I would get her checked out by the vet. If she has good hips I would wonder why an 8 year old is stiff and achey, has it come on gradually or did she have an injury. Buffy is nearly 10, with bad hips but she never showed discomfort with them, however she also developed spondylosis recently, and is on cartrophen injections which seems to keep her comfy. She can't go for long walks but is never reluctant to come out. Once a vet has seen your girl he will hopefully be able to prescribe something, metacam is also good, to make her more comfortable, please do not assume because she is a GSD it is natural for her to become stiff, or certainly not at a comparatively young age.

MM makes a good point - she may have hurt herself and this would explain why she is reluctant to move so much (I won't bore you but my young dog had a fall, hurt his back and jumping and twisting for his ball did not help)

He was stiff and lame behind but striding out in front - trying to limit the pain, did these humungous stretches, uncomfy getting up, not happy on walks, I thought it was his hips, argh, but X-rays showed it was in the back and it was sorted out with anti-inflammatories.

I'd see if you could have her x-rayed, it might not be as bad as you think :)

I was discussing this with OH and I have just remembered a while ago the monster JRT who loves to try and hang off the GSD's fluffy bum nipped her on the back of the leg and I do recall my girl yelping but tbh when they play there is always a great deal of noise

CC that what she does, we have wooden floors and her when she appears to be stiff she has trouble getting her back legs under her and is reluctant to move as in she stay there rather than investigate everything. She also does massive stretches.

I know the difference is very subtle but I know my dog and it is very recent where ii ts slightly more pronounced. I thought she was very slightly stiff a couple of months ago just moving differently thats why I put her on Devils Claw.

I will take her to the vets and see what advice and treatment they suggest. Thank you everyone
