Advice please...

Big man went to the vet this morning, he had grazed the bulb of his near side hind and his leg went up like a balloon on Thursday, i went down with cold hosing and the wound is very clean and healing nicely but took to the vets as it was still a bit puffy. He has had cellulitis before so this wasn't a huge surprise.

Vet gave us 5 days antibiotic and 4 days bute and said to give him a week off and walk in hand and that the wound looked fine, very nice vet, very friendly and explained things nicely and was quite cute :)

Now for the question, is there any real reason (other than experienced vets suggestion that I walk in hand) that I can't walk him either in saddle or bareback?
 
our mare had cellulitus following having mudefever during the winter..she was also given time off by the vet, if I remember correctly it was just so she wasn't doing any 'work' on the leg as cellulitus can be painful..but she too was allowed to be turned out & walked in hand.
 
Thanks for the reply, I was more wondering if it would make a huge difference how I walked him, he is not lame and doesn't seem to be in any pain, his leg is only slightly puffy and no warmer than his other legs, just think it would be nicer to be on him than beside him I am not objecting to walking him in hand, I am just wondering why in hand and not on his back :)
 
Cant comment on the particulars with your case as obviously havent seen the horse. However, many uncomplicated cases of cellulitis i have suggested to owners to hack out in walk under saddle for 20mins daily as well as turnout. Others I have recommended in hand walking and turnout - depends on the horse. Id give him a ring Monday morning and find out if its ok.
 
Thanks Glenruby, I wish i had thought to ask at the time, I had never taken a horse to the vets before and was all smiley and noddy, listening and then thought later, doh!

Will give him a buzz tomorrow.
