I am wanting to pay someone (a friend of a friend) to come and do horses when I'm on holidays but concerned this may not be this simple. What do I need to be careful of and make sure for ins? Only 2 horses at private family home. Can anyone advise please?

Well I would take my horse into livery if this happened to me but if you were to get someone in to do it I would state VERY clearly what the horse needs and how you do everything. Although it is do-able. I would get someone you know well and trust. Let me know how you get on...

Hi

I used to freelance riding, teaching and also baby sitting horses. Some of my customers wanted me to routinely do them a number of mornings or evenings a week, whilst others simply wanted me to look after them whilst they were away.

I had insurance through my riding and teaching. Although I never checked I presumed this would cover me in the case that I needed to claim for anything that happened to me whilst looking after the horses.

As for the people I worked for I don't believe any of them had any form of insurance, other than their normal horse insurance.

I wouldn't be discouraged from using someone, just make sure you know them and trust them. If possible get them to come and do the horses whilst you are still there so that you are confident you trust them. And finally, make sure you leave clear instructions!!

Good luck and have a fab holiday!

get them to come and do a typical day routine with you there showing them everything you do also state insurance ask if they are insured or tell them that you are etc tell them what you would want if horse had to have a vet ie colic op expensive op etc i know its horrible to think but if its covered you havent got to worry. also have another person on stand by ie i always give the person doing mine a back up number if a problem should arise and i cannot be reached .

Having looked after a friends horses at her house for free, please can I say, leave written instructions? I remembered everything she wanted done until it came to doing it and ended up second guessing about hay quantities! Simple but easily forgotton!
