I have to elderly neddies (21 TbxConnie and 22 TB) my 22 TB has a large lump on his spine and the vet is concerned it is an abcess draining from his spinal column.
I am trying to be positive but the antibiotics don't appear to have touched it so the vet is due to come back on Monday. He is fine in himself and untill now was out doing distance rides at the weekends.

I am so worried that the news is going to bad and I really don't know what to do if we have to have him PTS. My boys are such good friends, I wanted to ask peoples advice on what do with the "other" horse while his companion is being PTS? Its breaks my heart thinking about it :(

I'd say take the healthy one away while its done, could someone take him for a walk or hack while its done? Then put him back with his friend after so he can see he's gone. Hopefully it won't come to that though for many years x

Could you introduce another companion, so they can start bonding. So if the worse does happen your other oldie won't be alone. I would remove the Horse and then have him put down. Then let your other oldie see him after

My healthy old boy hates being taken away from his friend and will call and worry my other one. It's all going round and round in my mind, I can't decide which way to do it :(

I have heard of some cases where its been done in the field with others out. Not just in an emergency when there's no choice, but as its not something I've seen myself I can't offer advice on it.

Try not to worry, I had two oldies that we're pair bonded and when I had to have one PTS I almost had the other done at the same time (28 and 30). Im so glad I didn't he's joined in a herd with the young ones and he looks ten years younger in himself. I was sure he wouldn't cope but how wrong I was. Hope all is well and your boy recovers.
