Hi!!

So i had the vet out to do my boys teeth.... i have ollie in a light rug most the time with i being so cold... either his stable or turn out etc. well the day the vet was coming i left his rug off in stable as was mild ish and thought i would give him a break from it.

so then the vet turned up and ollie had chewed at himsel all over his sides, i havent seen him do this before, only had him 2/3 months.

vet said its lice and gave me shampoo. he said to use normal shampoo, scrape excess off then mix lice shampoo with water and leave him soaked. so this i fine apart from its now snowing and freezing cold. i was waiting for weekend to do it but then dropped cold etc.

so i went and bought barrats lice powder for horses which i did 3 days ago, with the intention to use the shampoo when weather a little better.

But he was rubbing on the fence today so left his rug off in stable for 10 mins to see if he chewed himself and he did. so it hasn worked?

any advice? should i just shampoo? but freezing? or lice powder again? would this irratate his skin doing it again?

any advice be super great thank you...

oh other 4 horses at yard have been lice powdered too, just incase but they seem fine

thank you!!!!!! :)

What are the instructions on the louse powder? It works by blocking up their breathing holes, but you usually need to reapply quite often. I would keep a close eye, follow the instructions and be aware that they may suddenly reappear again.

Also, how often are you taking your horse's rug off? You should be doing it daily and give him a groom and look over to check for injury or disease, or rubs from your rug etc.

You're right I would be reluctant to shampoo a horse in this weather. There are various different treatment options, if powder doesn't work ring your vet for a chat :)

I'd just shampoo. But with warm water, & a rug I didn't mind boil washing or binning thrown over whilst he's soaking. I'd also use a plastic curry to brush the lice shampoo right down to the base of the coat. And make sure you treat rugs, grooming kit, saddlecloths etc at the same time else they'll just move straight back.

I second Littlelegs hot water and pre-treated rug at the ready to throw over and of course treat everything that has been in contact with him. I would have thought it was too cold for lice to survive unless on the horse but better to be safe that re- infest!

we had a similar situation with a new horse we got a few years back - it was freezing cold but he had lice badly. We just got on and bathed him but made sure we used hot water both for the shampoo and rinse, did him out the wind and had several coolers stood by to put on to dry him off as well as towel drying as much as possible. So long as you wrap him up afterwards he'll be ok
