Hello everyone. So just over 2 years ago now I loaned out my mare as I was way too busy with college, couldn’t drive at the time so had to rely on parents for lifts (who both work) and I wasn’t working enough to afford her comfortably. 2 years down the road all these things have changed and I have asked her loaner for her back. I’m 19 for reference and I’ve had this mare since I was 14 and brought her on myself.

When I loaned her to this woman, she changed her bit from a snaffle (which she had been ridden in her whole life) and put her in a kimberwick with a chain, and also changed her saddle although she had suffered with back problems when I first got her. I found her an (expensive) well fitting saddle and I would have definitely preferred to have her kept in it. These are things that she never asked me about and if she had I would have told her not to but regardless, what’s done is done.

Anyway, I was planning on putting her back in all her old tack when she comes home so I messaged her loaner to see if I could pop up to the yard and grab it as she is very local to me and I expect it will need a good clean as it’s been sat there near on 2 years untouched. Then she says to me it’s going to take her a few days to “get it sorted”. She says it might be ready for me on Monday which is 5 days time. I can’t imagine what would take this long other than she has lent my saddle to somebody as she lives 5 mins down the road from me and would be very easy for me just to grab my tack. I really don’t know how to feel about this and what to say to her if it has been damaged or worn in any way. She has not asked me if she can lend it to somebody and I’m honestly not sure myself whether this is normal or how to approach it. Even if it’s in perfect condition should I say something? I’m kicking myself for not going and getting it from the stables when she first told me she had changed the saddle! Please someone help me on what to say and if this is a normal thing when loaning a horse. TIA x

I take it being 5 mins down the road you have been checking on her on a regular basis? When did you actually find out about the changes she has made. A lot of horses change shape with the way they are worked so I wouldnt be too surprised at that, providing she has stored you saddle adequately 😊
Id just pop down and let her know you are there to pick up her belongings etc

I think I would simply pick up the tack when I picked up the horse. I presume this is soon?

As long as horse and tack look fine, I think I would just thank my lucky stars that someone stepped in to look after my horse when I could not. I would not think too deeply into it, as nothing can be changed now.

I feel it is not healthy, stressing now about something that may or may not be 'wrong' and cannot be changed even if it is wrong. If the horse had been using the saddle all this time, then it would be more worn anyway.

I feel it would be more healthy to look forward to time back with your horse. The horse may have changed shape anyway, maybe you would actually prefer to buy the new saddle from the loaner, if it is a better fit. This may only be achieved with a more positive outlook though, as any negativity will leak over to the loaner, who is probably devastated anyway to give the horse up after 2 years.

Heck, I can see why I don't loan!

Thanks for your reply! ☺️At the beginning of the loan I kept in touch often but didn’t want to interfere too much if that makes sense, I didn’t want to annoy her new loaner by being too overbearing but I visit her every month just for a cuddle and a carrot. I found out about the saddle the first time I asked to ride her since loaning her out and I was given the other saddle to tack her up with which is when I found out so I’m not exactly sure when it was changed. She actually changed the saddle as she said she didn’t find mine comfy to ride in and too small for her to sit in which is understandable (although I would have liked to know) but I had seen my saddle stored in the storage area of the barn so I knew it was there and safe. I had asked if I could get it and she said it would take a few days which is why I was confused as it had never been a problem for me to pop down there and pick up things / drop them off for her if that makes sense. x

I would guess the saddle is absolutely filthy and she wants to clean it before handing it back ?
I told her I’m happy to clean it and not to worry about doing it (it’s actually something I enjoy, and was going to clean it anyway) but it hasn’t been being used so it wouldn’t be filthy and I’d saw it stored with its cover on when I first found out about the saddle change, so although it may be a little dusty, it wouldn’t be dirty x

Doesn’t sound like anything sinister then, all will be well, she probably wants to give it a little clean for you 😊 are you excited to get your pony back? ❤️

How do you know she’s definitely loaned it out? Maybe it’s in her loft or stored away in garage etc and she can’t get to it. I know I find it very difficult to access my loft without husband.
Hi! So I’d previously seen where it had been stored at the yard with the other unused tack, so I can’t see a reason why it would have to move as there’s only 3 people at the yard and tons of space. Definitely a possibility though Im not 100% sure Im just a worrier and wanted to talk to someone about it 😅😂
