Advice pls for watch/guard dogs!

If your looking for a guard dont forget to keep in mind that a puppy wont be territoral til they are mature...i no somone got a GSD puppy as a guard dog but he didnt started barking and acting as one until he was almost 2..he was on outdoor dog to.

Our GSD's are fab guard dogs - they wouldn't hurt a fly, but create merry hell the moment someone, be it in a car or on foot, gets to our gate, which is up a long drive, even though they cannot see it from either the house or kennels. The slight squeaking of the gate handle turning will normally set them off. The fact they look so intimidating is also a plus point - one of ours actually runs away from strangers, so is pretty useless, but still looks intimidating to anyone who doesn't know her. And, as Carney says, it might take a while for a pup to learn the ropes. Our baby is 6 months now, and will bark when people come, but she has grown up with 2 others, and so has learnt that it's the thing to do.

Some of the best watch dogs I have come across on yards are Border Collies.

Tough, hardy, trainable, loyal and very alert. No problems with them living in kennels outside.

My dogs are pets, but also Guard Dogs, unfortunately they feel obligated to tell us about every little creature that passes their yard, cats, coons, deer etc. A cat passing by can wind them up as much as any car pulling onto the driveway so I never actually know what they are barking about.

The most useless Guard Dog I have ever known was a vast and totally magnificent Mastiff, oh he was an effective visual deterrent alright, but the worst he'd ever do to anyone was soak them with happy slobber
