My friends mare is 37, in November last year she developed scabs all over her body especially her trunk area, she was also very depressed and sore. The scabs literally came up overnight and as soon as we found them we got vet out. Vet initially thought she had liver failure and took bloods, gave her antibiotic and a vit/min injection. She was also put on a course of antibiotics. Bloods came back fine apart from very anaemic and high white blood cell count so she was put on propell plus and continued with A/B's

Within 3/4 days she was looking happier, vet said as long as the scabs stayed dry not to worry but start to pick scabs out once they'd loosened as it was a bacterial infection and that's where the bacteria live. We've been doing this and although she's looking better she still looks dreadfully moth eaten and has very dry/flaky skin. The areas that didn't have scabs are beautiful shiny coat but my friend is so upset with how she looks and is worried about how uncomfortable it must feel. She is going to call vet again but is there anything else we can do??

Hun, she's 37. Not sure what that would equate to in human years but it has to be something in the order of 95+. Oh that I could look like Cheryl Cole when I reach 95 (fat chance since I don't now) but the reality is different. In veteran horses, immune systems don't work as well, nor does digestion, skin health, joints, hearts etc etc etc. What your friend is seeing is the inevitable decline in a 37 year old. She's done brilliantly well to keep her veteran so happy for so long - hope she's got many more years ahead of her but I doubt if they'd be show quality years x

Is she on any skin supplement or feed balancer? maybe she needs a boost. 37 is a very good age though, well done on getting her this far

I agree with Box of Frogs (!) that she might be expecting too much but try a mud fever cream as it sounds as if the scabs are being caused by the same type of bug. Try Mudbar or Mudguard - both really good.
