Hi all

After being stuck in for the last few weeks with little turnout (damn weather!!) Lords' hind legs have become rather swollen, there is no heat in them at all. I'm after any advice as to help ease the swelling, I am excercising him whenever I can but due to a frozen school this isn't a lot!! He has also started to wear bandages when he is in.

Someone please remind me WHY I got a youngster

as if his sticky stifle isn't enough to contend with with little excercise opps!

sounds like hes stocking up? stable bandages should help.

oh oops, sorry ! are you bandaging them or using wraps? magnets may help too - also perhaps try a stable ball to get him moving around his stable?

Like othershave said if there is no pain then he should be fine. Stables bandages will help, also walk him out in hand as much as you can. Get him toys to help him move round his stable a bit more in the night. Hopefully the weather will ease soon and we can all get back to normal

I agree with others and say that your horse should really be walked out or have some form of excercise, however limited, every day to get the circulation going. Stable bandages should help but will need removing at least once a day. Cut out any un necessary hard feed and just give plenty of hay/haylage and water. Once he can go out and have consistent excercise again the problem should disappear.

my mare got this last year living out.... she was fully fit when the snow/ice came in and stopped play - so she stood by her haylege pile and ate and ate and ate... (and piled on the lbs! oops!)
i cut down to half haylege and half straw and dropped her hard feed to just fibre nuts - maybe you could cut the protein/hard feed in the diet a bit?! may help...
i also used magnetic boots for 12hrs a day for a week and that also seemed to really help
