Are you aware that Iams is owned by nestle?

That's why I'd never consider it. I boycott all their products!!

Slinky do you know if the Skinners is made up with a lot of cereal grains and does it need soaking? I tried a gundog food on mine a year or so ago and because it was a meusli type food they just wouldnt touch it, soaked or dry.

Im going to get some Burns Chicken and Rice today and see how we get on with that as my local ag merchant is a stockist. If that isnt met with approval I may try the Skinners one. Other than that I can see me boiling chickens and rice again!

Not the one I feed - I think its duck and rice - and its a hypoallergenic one so no gluten etc in it. My spaniel happily eats it - some times just splash some hot water on it to make a bit of 'gravy' for him

Have a look on their website - I posted for HH /\ /\ - its goes through all the different feeds on there.

hope that helps

It's why you see "baby killers" written across their billboards etc... It's really disturbing some of the underhand practices they've used...

I've got carried away googling about it now, you can go all day finding interesting stuff:

This is exactly why I choose to feed raw! It was also the “E” range that informed someone that their dogs were allergic to chicken!!!!!! Those dogs now eat raw chicken as the main part of their diet with none of the huge range of ill effects from the dried sack C*ap they were on, not the chicken then was it!

That’s why I say if you really care what goes down your dogs throat ASK THE BRAND YOU USE SOME AWKWARD QUESTIONS, if they don’t answer you know there may be a problem. All these companies are in it for a profit. Can you imagine going to the supermarket and buying a sack full of meat, how much would that cost?? They cut corners as people do not want to pay that price, so they use condemned or overripe meat (cooked to death at high temps) in their product and cheaper veg or grains to bulk it out.

If no one challenges them so they continue to get away with it, even some expensive ones. How many brands do you think would let you visit a processing plant?????

I sleep well at night knowing that I feed my dogs a variety of natural succulent foods, no need for colours, cooking, artificial nutrients, preservatives or flavourings. Plus I help the environment by feeding them human grade fresh unwanted by products, for less than or the same as packet, can or sack, just a little more thought and a bit of defrosting !

Slinky - we found that the ag merchants also stock Skinners so went for the Duck and Rice. Collie is a little suspiscious but cocker has eaten properly tonight for the first time in a couple of weeks so she is obviously impressed!!

Thank you!!

For all Skinners feeders:

I went into my feed merchants last week to get some more, and they told me that the advice from the Skinners rep was that you should feed 1 sack of salmon-and-rice for every 3-4 sacks of duck-and-rice you feed, IF you are feeding it because your dog has skin problems. Apparently the protein formation is different in the two flavours, and this stops the dogs building up a reaction to the duck and rice.

Just thought this might be useful

Mine dont have any skin problems luckily, so I dont need to change, although I'm pretty sure the flavours cost the same so the Skinners rep wasnt trying to make money or anything here

spaniel - pleased you got hold of some and that the cocker is happy with it!
grin.gif
Try splashing hot water over it if collie is still reluctant - I think it makes it smell more appetising or something but it definately works. Ignore me if you did...

splotchy - thanks for that. Mine don't have skin problems but I do try and change the flavour so they don't get bored

- yes I know they are dogs and probably don't notice....

- they love the salmon one!!

Quick reply here!

Not all Field and Trial are wheat gluten free, only the duck and rice and the salmon. The salmon is more expensive, the duck being £19.95 for 15kg, can't remember what the RRP is for the salmon but is over £20.

PLEASE - read the back of the bags for the ingredients! Remember that if the food says 'chicken and rice' the legal minimum the food will contain is 4% chicken and 4% rice - yes really! Bakers is a shocker - because it is often multi coloured, only one of the five different nuggets is a 'meat nugget, therefore you may have less than 1% meat in the bag - and it's still about £27 a sack! Mooch about at Pets & home turning over all the bags to read the ingredients - remember that a cheap food which says meat and animal derivatives could contain feathers, feet, heads etc.

Foods that go well in our shop are F&T crunchy £14.99 and maintenance £16.99, Chudleys working crunch £12.59, all wheat based foods and particularly popular with those with working (gun) dogs. Wheat gluten free favourites are the F&T duck and Autarky (which is Dodson & Horrell) which is just over twenty quid. We sell a lot of Burns, JWB has stopped selling completely. We personally feed all of ours on Oscars maize fish and potato, which is wheat gluten free, made in Britain, a British company with fully declared ingredients, and they don't use battery hen meat, imported lamb etc etc.

MMmmm reading the above I can see why you attempted to get me to stop feeding Bakers.. I really don't fancy dog food coated in syrup full of additives but the flipping dogs love it.
My criteria is they must enjoy their food, I don't want tons of meat in it because it causes farting, and I want the dogs to look shiny and healthy.
Don't care if it's gluten free or not.
I've tried the cereal rich foods and they really turn their noses up, the only other one they really loved was lidls'...but I wouldn't get that delivered free would I !!!!

The reason that people who've dogs have been on bakers won't eat anything else long term, is due to the additives they put in it. You need to very gradually ease in a new feed and wean them off Bakers.

Thanks for all the advice guys, really helpful. I'm going to investigate different prices now but I think I will try Skinners or Burns as they seem to have the most votes. Bullies can suffer from skin problems but so far mine is fine, we were told by the vet to feed her one evening primrose capsual with her dinner every day to keep her skin and eyes healthy and prevent them from drying, which is what we do and she is lovely and shiny. :-)

This is a really intresting thread

I know every morsel my horses eat, but am guilty of not being so fussy with the dogs.

Has anyone heard about the 'simple systems' dog food? I was sure I'd read something about it, but have googled and can't find out anything?

That's exactly why I changed my dogs' diets to an holistic one (I use one that I know every ingredient and can pronounce them all, too!)
wink.gif
I was feeling guilty that I personally knew every morsel that my horse eats in her bucket/manger/net, but no clue what the dogs were really getting. But now my guilt is not only at bay, but my dogs look/feel much better for it. It wasn't easy switching them, but it was worth it in the end.

Having actually read the back of the packet of the bakers food , and other foods like it it has a very low amount of meat 'derivatives' and is bulked up with cheap carbohydrates and additives - much like feeding your dog cheap chicken nugggets or turkey twizzlers !

Poppy gets fed whatever we eat , adapted to her needs . For example if we are having a fresh chicken curry with rice she will have the chicken and rice , without the sauce . and things like tuna , pasta , fresh veggies . She is a perfect weight with no allergys and plenty of energy !
