Hey all, been meaning to introduce myself in here for ages but just haven't gotten around to it, and I certainly didn't want my first post to be a whingey advice seeking one
frown.gif

Trooper, our homebred 14month old springer x collie is quite poorly.
Yesterday he was 'off', really quiet and just not himself (usually a scatty, bouncy lunatic type
smirk.gif
) This morning he is much worse and was very lethargic first thing. He seemed to pick up, so we didn't take him to morning surgery, but now he has gone downhill again - very miserable, tucked up and shivering. His paws are VERY cold. Afternoon surgery isn't until 2pm... do you think he'll be ok until then?

He hasn't been anywhere for a while and nothing in his diet has changed, with the exception that he loves carrying around the ice from the top of the water tanks....... is there some sort of bug he could have picked up from doing this?

Any experiences/advice appreciated

Really worried as he has NEVER been off colour, let alone ill

Ther's a few things doing the rounds right now.
Canine Influenza & kennel cough mainly.
I'd ring the vet, shivering isn't good in a working breed & is a sign of shock from many causes....one of them being toxic related.

Could of course be just a chill that's taken hold, but in a young , fit active dog I'd be concerned.
Let us know what the vet says.

Thanks for the reply.
Do you think he'll be ok to wait until 2pm, or should I try and get him to a vet before then?
I'd be very surprised if he'd picked up a doggy virus type thing as he literally hasn't been off the place in months, and our other 4 dogs (all collies) are feeling absolutely fabulous.
At the moment he's curled up on the sofa with the heating on.. would it be worthwhile popping a rug/blanket on him to try and keep him warmer?

Ill horses I can cope with, ill dogs and I haven't a clue!

They just don't get ill usually....

Wouldn't worry too much, it sounds like he might have just got an upset stomach? Does he have diarrhoea or has he been sick? My two are delicate little flowers who have those sort of symptoms fairly regularly
frown.gif
but I now have the administration of Pro-Kolin (a kaolin/pro-biotic paste) down to a fine art

The vet will soon sort him out, and will charge you tremendously for the pleasure

No sickness or diarrhoea. He's drunk a little but still seems thirsty, and won't eat (VERY unusual for him!). He's curled up by the fire looking throughly miserable.

The bill can't possibly be as bad as the £900 one that our cat clocked up.. only to come home and p*ss/sh*t in the bath, on the floor, on the pile of clean washing, in the dogs bed etc etc .... on a daily basis!

We really wish we hadn't bothered!

Hmmm, maybe a constipation type thing which will suddenly - ummm- materialise at some point?

And vets bills - I can beat that - £2,600 for our greyhound when her leg was amputated - who wasn't insured!

You live and learn

But at least she made a really, really good recovery and has gone on to have a great life

(unfortunately not with me however - b****y OH leaving me meant she had to be re-homed

LOL about the cat, but they aren't even an option for me - the greyhound likes them for breakfast

Didn't realise you had 5 dogs though

Everything was 'normal' this morning with regards to his toiletry habits, it wasn't until after he came in that we realised just how bad he was
frown.gif
He wouldn't even go out and hoon like he usually does - normally he bounces off the walls until they are all allowed out together.
At least you liked the greyhound... we didn't even like the cat in the first place, LMAO! He's 16 now and seems determined to make us suffer his presence for as long as possible!

We did only have three.... Molly, and one pup from each of her litters, but my Nan and Grandad have moved in and brought their two dogs with them, one of which is another of Moll's pups, LOL, and a working collie. Now they are ALL in our house, ALL of the time!

Hi all...
Troop went to the vets this afternoon. He has a temp of 104 degrees
crazy.gif
, which apparently is enough to cause all of his symptoms; the shaking, heavy breathing, cold paws etc. But the vet didn't really have anything else to go on as he isn't in pain anywhere and hasn't been sick or diarrhoea-ing.
He have him a super-huge dose of antibiotics and is seeing him again tomorrow... he didn't want to start giving him various other medicines until he can narrow the cause down otherwise he was worried he would mask symptoms.
He is vaguely concerned about leptospirosis at the moment because of the fact Trooper is an adventurous outdoorsy dog, but he said this is almost impossible to pinpoint for diagnosis anyway because of the nature of the bacteria

Anyway - will update tomorrow.
