Hello there this is my first post so bare with me..

Ok so here is a brief background on my boy. Hes 15.2hh heavy cob,9 yrs old. Before he came to me he had only ever been used for hunting, he had hunted 4 seasons just with my godmothers yard alone before he came to me. I was told he would be no good in the school end of, whether this was due to his laziness or the previous owner not bothering to work with him I don't know.

However I have owned him now for 3 months and schooling is going well, he was extremely hard to get going and was numb to my leg aids and trot was only a few strides of squeezing each stride before he gave up and went back to walk again, we have a lot more impulsion now thanks to the John Whitaker flexi spurs which I purchased, its only a light squeeze and were off!

Regardless of all this he has no sense of direction which I put down to his hunting past, when he came I had him in a plain old snaffle which was horrendous just me being pulled around the schooling or fighting against him until I gave up and went the direction he chose!

Here we are now, French link full cheek snaffle, my best friend so far! He is softer on the mouth with this bit in and we have far less occasions of me being pulled around but im looking for any tips or advice on how to teach him to turn and listen to my aids, we cant get round the school track in walk, he ends up going off track and cutting off the corners and wonders wherever he fancys and if I ask him to turn with anything, legs/reins he pulls me! :(

Any Advice or tips would be much appreciated! :)

The book Cobs Can by Omar Rabia is really good. I have a 14.3hh chunky 12 year cob who has only started schooling this year. She too had problems walking in a straight line as well as bending and had lots of tricks for evading! Although she is forward going. We do lots of transitions and use a lot of pole work to keep her interested and focussed.
