Little rescue dog aged 6 years not clean in the house. Making slight progress by treating as puppy with frequent trips to the garden. I need help with the poos as she often goes during the night even after being taken out really late. I thought maybe need to feed at different times to try and have her need to go at more appropriate times.

Currently she is fed at about 9.30 in the morning and 4.00 in the afternoon. She has been with me for about a month and mid April I will be away to look after a family member after an operation and my husband will be coping so really want this to be better before then.

She is not stupid but her start in life was so bad that she has not learnt any of the basics and was badly beaten up and is slightly disabled because of this.

Not sure how long after eating (dry food) it is digested and she would need to go and poo.

Any help and advice would be great as am getting nervous about leaving for 2 weeks in April.

Is she create trained? If not it might be worth doing as if she's in a create over night she is very unlikely to mess. I wouldn't have thought it would take long to break the habit using a create.

What time do you feed it??? in the evening - we feed ours at 8pm then walk at 10pm and he is ok for the night

I feed my dogs at 6am and then between 4 and 5 pm .
If I where you I would crate train it's the best way to solve this issue .

Were you to feed only once a day and then only first thing in the morning, the dog by night time should have a virtually empty bowel. I've only ever fed dogs once a day and from the age of 9 months onwards. My house dogs do get fed in the evening, but then they manage to hang on through the night. If they didn't it would be breakfast only.

I hope that helps!

Alec.

crate training is brilliant for that problem, we had a little rescue dog and it completely sorted her out.

crate train her, and the smallest crate that she would be able to curl up in. any bigger and you run the risk that she will have space to poo outside her bed. Mine eat at night, but at any time as I dont work regular hours, and they can go right through the night regardless, Infact they have been known to eat about 7pm, and take themselves off to bed, refuse to go out later, and decide to have a lie in till about 11.30 am the following day. I suspect it may be stress or temperature that means she wakes up at night, and then poos. Try crate training, or try keeping her warm so the radiators going off dont cause her to get cold and wake up.

All my foster dogs I crate train the crate is only big enough to sleep in, if its too big it will defeat the object so if you only have a large crate pad it out. At night when I go to bed I cover the crate with a thick throw. I feed mine the same time as yours and most of my foster dogs are not house trained but it doesnt take them long to get the message.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will start off by feeding her much earlier, she is always hungry and will eat at any time. The other dogs do not feel like eating in the morning even when offered and do not seem to get any appetite until mid /late afternoon. So will have to feed them all at different times but worth the effort if it works. I do not have a crate nor have seen one, do they look like those travel crates for planes? I am less confident than most of you seem to be in this method for her as she has already messed IN her basket and on the car seat!! So will start trying to get this sorted with eating much earlier. Thanks again and I may be back for more help.

Sounds like it may well be stress related, so getting her used to the crate will be an absolute bonus. but you will need to take it slowly and make sure she sees the crate as her safe haven. I cover mine with a dark blanket so it seems like a cave and they have all loved their crates, taking themselves off to them when they want to sleep. I leave them open during the day so they can come and go as they want, but at night, or if i am going out I shut the doors. They just sleep until they are opened up again. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ellie-Bo-Fo...?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1456841275&sr=1-1

If you pm Cayla on here with your email address Im sure she would sent you a crate training guide, Cayla runs her own rescue and fosters her own dogs so she has a wealth of knowledge and is the first person I turn to for advice. If you sent her a small donation for the guide it would be much appreciated though she will kill me for suggesting it.
