i have recently decided to get another collie,those of you that have read my post regarding this will know the difficulty i have had in chosing between two litters.
one litter i turned down due to breeding restrictions and the other i have my name on a waiting list.

to add to this i have also just took up sheepdog training(three lessons so far) and my trainer has told me i am a complete natural and should think about competing and should definatly think seriously about the lines i get as i should go for a working line not KC.

how do i tell the breeder of the litter i was having ???
she is the breeder of one of my present dogs and a sort of friend.
she also goes sheepdog training so i would insult her if i said her lines weren't good enough,my trainer only told me on the quiet.
 
Have you decided to go for the other dog then?
Is the competitions something you think you want to do?
If so, I don't really know how you can tell her, unless you find another litter and say you want one of them?
 
probably not explained very well
there were two litters(KC reg) and i decided on one and told the other one that i wasn't having one from them.

then my trainer said i should go for a ISDS reg working line as will have more natural ability(her words not mine)

so now i have to tell the breeder of the other litter that i'm not having one from her.

but i will be getting one from another litter(ISDS)
so will see her at training with my new puppy so she will see that i have another puppy.


just hate mucking people about ,the only trouble is that you have a dog for hopefully a long while and want the right one
 
Well you have to think about the whole picture - remember that although you may want to work your new pup she will also have to fit in with your household and in my experience working lines are much harder to live with than KC lines. They tend to to have very driven 'manic' personalities and although this can be good when harnessed for work - can be terrible if you want a quiet life at home

. - and as you say - you will have to live with your choice for a long time.

Most Border Collies display an instinctive herding drive and if I were you I would ask the trainer if she would come with you to help you assess the pups from the KC litter to choose the one that displays the most promise for training.

lastly a KC reg pup would also give you the option of showing later on if she turns out good enough and if she proves succesful either a as worker or in the showring you would be able to register her pups with the Kennel Club should you decide to breed - not an option with an ISDS reg pup.

i think you can duel register ISDS with both societies,but the KC are less fussy.
shows me they care about the breed more.
my dogs live out so the need to fit in is not so much of an issue as indoor dogs.
 
If they are both KC registered.. then I would go with the one that you are going to be able to live with...

Imagine that you decide that you don't wnat to 'seriously' compete... and have a highly strung working dog (I'm not saying it will be - however you know the temperament of one of the breeders dogs as you already have one!!)

Also - just because it has good breeding doesn't g'tee it'll be a good/trainable/attentive dog...

Tough one.. but remember you have to live with the dog you choose!!

I guess it depends on how serious you are about the sheepdog training. Serious enough to upset your friend? Also, you probably already know that getting a dog from a working strain doesn't necessarily guarantee a good working dog. Rescues and pounds all over the country have loads of abandoned and rejected working collies that don't make the grade but are also not very suitable as family pets.
 
i am serious about the training and the friend is only a friend as i got the first dog from her.
i am aware that bloodlines don't guarantee what work they can do.
i did say to my trainer what if i don't keep up sheep training will i be wasting a talented dog??
to which she answered that no as i will always work a dog,(either mentally or physically) as i am that way inclined.
 
Chick, TBH it sounds like you have made up your mind...

If I were you I would speak to the ISDS breeder and see how far down teh waiting list you are for the pup.... then if you are satisfied that you will get a pup from the ISDS litter then speak to lady that you have currently agreed to have a dog off... and be honest, just advise that your 'dog requirements' have changed and that you wish to compete & show the dog... and you have the opportunity to take on a pup from a working dog....

TBH I'm sure he won't be upset with you - if she is passionate about her dogs she will understand your reasons. xx

i do think that the breeder will understand as she always sells her dogs easily,just don't want to mess people around.
i have spoke to a few ISDS breeders and have found a possible puppy now will speak to my trainer to see if they think it will be ok and i will confirm with her i am doing the right thing again too.

Do what you want chick... if she sells the dogs quickly then she won't mind at all!!

oh puppy pics are sooooo cute aren't they and i love the smell of puppies too.
just spoke to trainer and she repeats that i can definatly do better than friends dog and is going to look out for one for me,she says she is sure friend will understand.


regarding friend,i am hoping when she sees the improvment i have made since she first saw me that she will realise how much better i would be with a working line collie.
 
A difficult one, but I would bit the bull by the horns and cancel her puppy, explain very nicely that you have had a change of heart and would like to try with a different line, explaining that you already have some of her line and that something different would be interesting and you may be considering starting a new line of your own and would not wish to compete against her in that way.

Or you could blame it on your other half, saying he had not realised you had ordered one, and has already paid a deposit on another puppy for you and cant get out of it.
