Well my horse hasnt been right for a few months now. Before he came back into work earlier this year, I got him fully checked over to make sure he was fine. He got a clean bill of health from the physio and stuff so we started working him. After a few weeks he started to refuse to trot on his right rein. Vet came out and examined him after watching him being worked and lunged and said it looked like his teeth. He went to do his teeth and they were fine. So he refeered me to a physio. She came out and said that he was slightly tight around his pelvis on right side and did what she could and referred me back to my vet for a lameness check on right hind.

So vet came out and said he had a misbalance on his SI region which he noticed first time round and said my horse was a little stiff behind but not lame and flexion tests didnt make anything worse. So was advised a month worth of walking with him.

After 2 weeks he started misbehaving again. Not wanting to go forward, spinning, rearing and occasionally bolted. I kept on at my boy as I wondered if he was being a bu**** as he was feeling better. But after another week and half had to contact the vet as I thought we were going to have a serious accident if something wasnt done. I felt like he was saying mum I dont want to. So was put on 4 days of danillion from the vet and the difference was amazing. We walked, trotted and cantered and I had to pull him out of a xc jump or too on our hacks. So vet came out and did another examination and flexion tests again showed nothing.

My horse has been off work now for a couple months to see if rest would help and while we wait to see if insurance will cover us for a scan. Got to try him the other day and I was very lucky not to come off and get seriously hurt. He has been out in the field and had his hind shoes removed as he not hacking out. Most days he drags his hind toes really badly. We put him on a few days bute to see if makes him comfortable but it hasnt made any difference.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Any advice would be greatfully appreciated.

Oh no :( It definitely sounds like there's something a rife, it's just I fear you will have to go down the road of scans and x-rays to find out exactly what - I guess you are obviously considering this as you mention waiting for the insurance company!

I can't say I have ever experienced exactly what you have described above, but I have had two horses with recurrent hind limb problems. One had recurrent SI joint problems causing allsorts of other serious issues - ligament supraspinous ligament damage etc. My other mare had OCD in her stifles which caused her to drag her toes a lot (had 2 Ops and still didn't recover); but I must say it sounds as if your boy might have a bit more/different than both of my two had.

The SI joint can cause a multitude of problems so hears hoping the insurance company is willing and you can get investigating!

You say you got him fully checked over before he came back in to work at the beginning of the year - what had he been off work for?

Thanks for that. The vet has said he does wonder if there could be more than 1 issue going on but until it gets investigated further then we wont know.

He escaped out his field and had a rotational fall due to the ground being higher on landing side than take off. He ended up on boxrest for 4 months due to a eye ulcer and he put his shoulder blade into his rib cage which was found out after he came off boxrest. The shoulder is now fine and been thoroughly checked now on 3 occasions. They have all said its something coming from pelvis/hind legs.

God that sounds awful, sounds like you have had way too much bad luck recently :( Here's hoping you have some good luck now!!

With any sort of fall pelvis and SI problems are very common as I am sure you are well aware. I have everything crossed for you - do let us know how it goes :)

Yeah I do think I have had my fair share of bad luck this last year. It goes from bad to worse. Yeah will keep you updated. Just hope my insurance cover everything as I cant really afford to spend another fortune on him at present. lol.

I just hope I get to the bottom of things and he going to be fine. Got my fingers crossed anyway. Haha.

Might be worth getting a equine body worker to have a look if you can find a really good one in your area. I would be worried that after him falling there maybe some scar tissue in the shoulder or anywhere else in the body. Especially with box rest.
I think there is defo pain somewhere for the bute to make such a difference. I had a EBW lady look at my tb and found it amazing what she picked up on then was given exercises such as streaching legs and handwalking over poles to help even my horse out.
