I have a 3 year old who is very attached to my newly broken 4 year old and when I started taking him away to lunge etc he got really upset even with another horse in a stable across from him, I was worried about him jumping out so initially closed the top door whilst I took the other one away, he made a fuss, shouted and knocked his water over a few times but with repetition seemed to realise that his buddy would come back after being taken out of the yard and after a couple of weeks I was able to leave the top door open with someone watching him initially and now I can hack both horses out and leave him alone in the stable without a problem.
I would just try and initially take the horses away for a short time and then bring them back and gradually lengthen the time away, either shut the top door or get your OH to watch him. Maybe also try a lick in the stable to keep him busy. Personally I would not leave a horse alone in the field, I think the stable is much safer.
