Hi all,

I am just wondering if anyone can help me. I bought a horse 4 months ago for a 5 figure sum and since then it has been awful.

She passed a 5 stage vetting and even though I queried her hind legs the vet said they were fine and could a pursue a career in eventing. Once the horse arrived a vet and farrier expressed real concern for her feet and hind limbs and advised I do not ride her. We then got her to a point where I could ride her but after 5 weeks she was having problems and was reviewed again.

She was then referred down to an equine hospital that has advised she has problems with her sacro-iliac joint. She has been given long lasting steroids and an intensive exercise plan for 5 weeks in the hope that the steroids provide enough comfort for her to work the top line muscles and in time support the joint. I do not want to sound negative but there are too many things gone wrong for me to think this will be successful.

This is me getting back into horses after 20 years and I admit that I obviously missed some stuff but I never expected this. I have spent over £2000 in vet fees and on top of livery and everything else it is becoming a bit of a struggle.

Needless to say the owners never had any issues with her and the horse was brought on by a dressage trainer who advises me I just need to get her moving forward and she will be fine.

I have put in a negligence claim on the vet that did the vetting and that is currently sitting with the VDS. My vet has been extremely supportive and has put a report together on why the horse should not have passed but I still do not see much hope. The previous owners are not horse dealers and it was a private sale therefore returning to them under the Trading Standards Act is not an option. She is insured but not for loss of use.

I have thought of putting the horse to sleep but I just cannot do it yet as it seems so unfair. However, if this latest problem with her sacro-iliac doesn't resolve I will need to reconsider this.

I have sought initial advice from a lawyer but as yet dealt with this myself.

I am just wondering if anyone else has any thought or opinions on what I can do?

Thank you in advance.

I think since your claim is already in progress with your own vet and the Veterinary Defence Society and you have already consulted lawyers that it's unwise at this stage to bring it onto a public forum.

I don't think any of us should offer our advice on anything which remotely touches the legal aspects of this situation.

I'm sorry, it's a horrible position to find yourself in, and if it comes to feeling you need to have the horse put to sleep you will find support on the forum for that decision.

Many thanks both for your comments.

I am sorry that you feel this inappropriate, that was not my intention at all. I, however, have no idea how to remove a post so I have 'reported' my own post (possibly a first!) to advise either how to remove or remove it for me.

Apologies again everyone, I never meant to make anyone feel uncomfortable or to gain advice that would go against any of the parties.

Thank you again.

I'm sorry that your mare is having these issues and that getting back into horse ownership has been such a difficult experience.

I think that YCBM is worried that you could harm your case, so I hope that admin will remove the post. However if you want to post a 'support needed - injured horse' thread in the tack room or a very generic 'experiences of sacroiliac issues and recovery' in the vet section without going into your horse's history in detail, I'm sure that you would get a lot of support. :)
