Have owned Archie for almost five years. Never been ill or lame (touches wood). Lives out 24/7/365. Summer lives on grass and a token feed after a ride, farrier. Winter, fed ad-lib hay, 1 feed per day consisting of large heaped scoop of Hi-fi, Dodson & Horrell pasture mix, well soaked speedibeat. Had him worm counted in October and his count was so low I was advised be didn't need worming. However, I didn't worm for tape worm. He has his own paddock, own water and is poo picked daily.

He has, for about the last two to three weeks been quite windy and his bottom is stained with watery poo. His dropping can be quite loose and then not so loose. Had vet out on Wednesday to do his teeth and he said Archie is in excellent health, heart, respiration, etc. I mentioned the wet wind, so to speak, and he wasn't overly concerned but said to worm him for for everything, including tape around April.

I have cut out the Dodson & Horrell these past few days as TBH he is getting a bit fat so am giving him the Hi-Fi and speedibeat and ad-lib hay.

I can't recall his bottom being like this before. What should I do, if anything? Could it be the cold grass he is eating? Shall I just monitor and worm as advised in April? I wondered if anyone else on here is having or had this trouble and what they did, if anything, to try to rectify things.

Many thanks

hi there. the grass has started to change so that wont help.i,d stop the sugar beet and just feed chaff and hay adlib.make sure he has plenty of water cos if his droppings are watery he will need it so he doesn,t dehydrate.you can use PINK POWDER from NAFF it helps the bacteria in the gut also another one is called TRIPPLE X...... XXX ,, It,s in a blue tub but can,t remember the make(you could google it).i had same prob with mine for 7 months he,s great now.hope your horse feels better v soon;)

Hi Archiesmummy sorry to hear about Archie's botty!
My lot are on round bale haylage and when they got a bit sloppy like you described I came on here and someone mentioned plain flour was good - also brewers yeast to help with the gut workings - so this is what I use. There was no mention of measures of flour so used a 25ml scoop (from pink powders I think) and only use it if they get loose. The brewers yeast I give them a small scoop - 10ml - once a day. Certainly seem to have plenty of poo to pick up at the moment!!!! Must be doing something right, even if I am fed-up with doing it. The brewers yeast comes from Holland & Barrett and is much cheaper than Pink Powders or Haylage Balancer, which my lot were on, and were still loose. Sorry NAF. Good luck with Archie. Sue

Sorry i can't see the point in feeding chaff AND ad lib hay, unless you are just using the chaff as a carrier for suplements.
There may be a change in the grass, if it has been mild where you are for a few days, then there could be some new growth. Tbo if as you say he is a bit fat, i would cut all hard feed out and give him just hay, if he is;nt in hard work then i doubt he needs it.

sorry should of said i would still give him a handfull of chaff as a token feed it wont hurt him.there are lots of different lotions and potions you can use but if you are really worried i,d get the vet out if he,s no better:D
