Advise for leading - I am at a loss!!

Er Hello - do you read threads - I am 23 ? Does that not mean I am an adult?

I am afraid I would not take advice off someone who ties their horse to a gatepost to haul it back!????

She is getting enough turnout for the minute - I wish people would read the whole post instead of reading what they want to - she has until now been getting 8 hours of turnout a day and has been a nightmare still - infact she is better now in a way as she doesnt try to bolt off anymore when she wants to come in for her tea!!!

I have used a chifney before but only leading horses about in one -never had to put one on and I really hate the idea of having to use one as I thought it was the most awful piece of kit I have ever seen!

Overall per day my pony gets 1 hour in the paddock - 30 minutes in the horsewalker, 2 hour hack, and one hour in the school - she isnt suffering from turnout at all and will be back out 24/7 in two weeks time!!!!

I spent a lot of time with her last night just leading her on a long line - making her back up - this was backed up with a firm tap from a show cane on her chest if she didnt - and she was really good - much more calm - enjoyed getting lots of praise etc - I also lunged her in the paddock for a few minutes instead of letting her go and then took her out of the paddock and then walked her around the yard and then took her back in the paddock and let her graze off the line - and she was great! So it just goes to show that advice is what I aksed for and the really good people to give me that were really helpful .

Well done for getting somewhere last night. When you've been posting on here for a bit longer you will know whose advice counts - and whose doesn't.

Henryhorn definately falls in the advice that counts catagory.

Another typical horsey forum where people are more interested in bitching and critising than actually helping - Whatever Honey!!! People might have more experience than me but I can still have an opinion on what I think is not a good idea and what isnt!?

Knowledge is indeed no the bomb Honey.

Thanks for your 'Lack of advice and you are only this website to mearly be rude and you have nothing else to do'

Great Honey!!

Actually no - although of course we do all enjoy the odd heated argument of course.

I was just pointing out that HH has a wealth of experience so may have some useful tips for you - apologies if that didnt' come accross from either her post or mine.

Hey ho...

No it didnt come across as that but I thank you for highlighting what you were trying to get at and thanks again for congratulating me on my progress.

My last post wasnt really aimed at you and I shouldnt have replied back to you - sorry

I just get so cross that these forums are for advice and from all the things that I have mentioned about me and my pony I have been batered with rubbish - its the same at my yard - there is a group of girls that constantly moan and bitch at each other and slag each others horses off and are always trying to get one over each other and its awful - and TBH it like that on here abit!!

I did think the post I got off the lady about tying the horse to the post was awful but at least it was advice and just because I wont do it doesnt mean it wont work!! I would put her muzzle on but she got cut to shreads last time and has stitches so wont be doing that again !!

I came on this site to get some advice which was PMd to me but the rest of it was just wasting my time - how can a person make any asumption on why a horse is doin what its doing from a forum ? Have an opinion yes but dont try to TELL and DICTATE to someone what they are doing wrong - horses are all different and 1. my horse isnt stressed out when she is arsing about - she is being naughty - the whole point of my thread was how to handle a bolshy firey horse not - why is my pony bad - because I already know that!!

Anyway - good luck with your foal - I lost mine last month due to my mare catching an infection :-(

OK, firstly Henryhorn DID say that that it wasn't something for YOU to try, simply something her husband had had to resort to doing with a horse that was taking the p*ss.

In order to give advice, one has to try to find a reason for a horses behaviour.....therefore tailoring the advice accordingly.

I am sorry you feel you were 'battered', but you are always going to get differing opinions on a site such as this.
We have a similar problem with our little welshy sometimes, mainly because she's anxious to get back to her friends in the paddock when she's been brought up onto the yard. Her behaviour is half p*ss take, half worry....and how she's handled has to be based upon that information.

To be fair BB - people can only comment on the discription given by the original poster. So for the majority (if not all of us) it would seem apparent that your horse needs more turnout - hence your problems.

You have asked for advice, but with every bit given you countered it with saying either the advice was incorrect, or it simply wouldn't work. You didn't say that the mare needed stitches after rubbing herself very badly with her grazing muzzle. If you had no one would have said put it back on.

Unfortunately like many hobbies - the horse world can be bitchy. Especially big yards. And if yours is particularly bad, and you can't accommodate what your horse seems to need then I don't see the problem with looking for another yard that better suits yours and your horses needs.

How about somewhere smaller that can accomodate their liveries more easily perhaps?

The tying to the gate was extreme - and HH did say that you shouldn't try it yourself, but was merely offering it as an example of what extreme horse behaviour can result in us having to do.

Horse owning should be enjoyable - not a daily battle of wills combined with dangerous behaviour, both of which your horse seems to exhibit.

I hope you manage to sort the problem out. But remember when you post on a public site - you will get public opinion, some of which you may not like to hear. Weed out what suits and disregard the rest. A bit like life really.

The biggest reason why my pony messes about is to get her own way - she is very confident - infact the only horse on that yard that couldnt care less when all her pals have gone in - which is great because its awful having a horse that goes mad if left on its own for two minutes - I feel for people who have that problem. She is a pony that is ruled by her belly completley and we have noticed the more hungry she is the more naughty she becomes!!! She needs taking down a peg or two and after 30 minutes of battling lat night - she lost and was ambling about on a headcollar and leadrope in no time!

I totally apretiate that HH told me not to do it - thats very good of her but I was annoyed at the get an adult to do it stuff - how many times do you have to say the same stuff over and over again!!!?? and apart form that what was the poitn in posting - its was nothing new to what others had said?

We don't always have time to read what others have said, especially if it's a big post........

Perhaps HH didn't realise how old you were? I don't think she meant to cause offence

I do get the battle of wills thing. We have a yearling who likes to try his luck every now and again so I do understand.

I am sure she didnt mean to offend and didnt really - and I did mention my dad in one of the threads - so dont blame her -

havent lived with parents for years Ha ha
