I know nothing about mares foaling or breeding so looking fr some advice.

There is a mare in the field opposite my house. We rent and are not from the area so I have no idea who owns the mare. Just been out for a cigarette and noticed the mare looks like she is in foal - i.e. big in foal tummy ( told you I know nothing!!!) she is a grey mare and I just noticed her tail is covered in blood and he back legs. I can't get near her to se better but the blood looks dry. The mare isnt in any distress, she is just grazing in the field but she is flicking her tail a lot but that could be due to flies with all the blood.

Anyone got any advice? I am thinking just keep an eye on her but if something is wrong, I don't no where I can go as I don't know the owner. I don't know how long she has been like this as I only noticed them in the field this morning.

Any advice????

be brave and let the RSPCA know there is a horse with blood on it. you can do it anonymously and they can at least make enquiries as to her owners

Does the Mare look as if she is looked after, have you seen anyone checking on her? If someone is caring for her well it is unlikely they would have left a pregnant Mare near to her due date unattended. If however it looks like it has been abandoned anything is possible!
Some times Mares can have discharge as part of their season (like a dog does) she could be beginning to foal or even miscarrying. If you are worried you could contact your local BHS welfare officer for advice. Let us know if there is a foal in the morning ;-)

Thansk for the replies. Am in RoI so RSPCA a bit different than ISPCA. they wont be out to see her tonight - there is no local ISPCA officer in this area. . Nearest BHS welfare officer is in Antrim so thats a bit of a trek!!! I certainly don't think she is abandoned. There is a yearling in the field with her. Sh is in good condition, enjoying good grass. I have seen horses in the field before (during the winter and someone used to come and feed them every day although they were left out there with no hay and no rugs! I haven't seen anyone check on her but I have only been in a hour or so and haven't been looking - only noticed the mare before I posted.

Maybe she is just in season but my own mare doesn't pass that much blood when in season so I thought it strange but I don't know if they vary. Like I said, she is in no distress - not looking at her tum, quite happily eating away but I have never seen one foal so I don't know what they are like.

No!!!! we are in a really rural location. Nearest vet would be about 15 miles away and they are serious racing vets I am bout 15 miles from the curragh. there are any number of horse vets there so I would have no idea which one they would use and after all, I wouldn't have details really other than its a grey mare - that really doesn't narrow it down. it could be anyone in a ten mile radius of here.

Heading out in a mo to have another look at her.
