i got my boy out this morning and he has got really swollen legs and alot of heat in them he never normaly suffers form puffy legs in the morning and he has been suffering bad in the day with the flies i wonder wether he has had a bite and reacted but it just seems funny that it is both back legs and they have alot of heat in them i have cooled them with water and rubbed anti septic cream on them in case there are any bites on them. he seems fine in himself.

do you think i should call the vet out he doesn't seem in any discomfort or should i keep a close eye on them .

any suggestions much appreciated.

If it were me..... I'd cold hose twice daily, carry on with the antiseptic in case there are any bites lurking & if not improved within a day or so, call the vet. (assuming it is a bite)
I'm presuming there has been no change in his feeding routine?

Hope he's back to normal soon

no, no change to his feeding routine and hes not ridden at the moment so i can only assume its bite but just worries me the fact that both of his back legs are swollen and really hot.

Do you have some like-ice or cooling clay or something similar? I'd put that on them. If you are worried get the vet out anyway, if only to put your mind at rest.

Yes, seems strange both hindlegs are affected

If he's not lame & is happy in himself & still eating then I don't think it can be that bad.

As Diablosgold said though, if you are really concerned phone the vet. It's only you that knows your horse after all & if you are very worried, it would be worth it to put your mind at rest.

As an aside, is there anything he could have had a reaction to? Have you put anything on his hindlegs or had anything near them & he has had an allergic reaction?

i would likeice them and bandage them up also putting cold warter on them during the day and keep him in over night hope he is fine tho

Another option could be lymphangitis, which causes fluid to build up, is he a big chap your boy? My MW/heavy 17 hand hunter suffers from it mildly, and it tends to affect back legs on bigger/heavier horses esp hunter types. If the legs arent down and stay down tomorrow i would def get vet out as there are a number of possibilities of what it could be including the above.

My friend had this with one of her horse's back legs and she was in foal.

Turned out the mare had cellulitis a very bad leg infection and lost the foal.

If in doubt call the vet out.

Sorry, I can be more positive

sounds like lymphangitis.. vet out.. antibiotics intraveinously and then turn out to be honest.
common in heavy hroses and Race horse but caused by high protien diet in them. Ted suffers bad from it and one of his hind legs is permenantly twice the size of the other from scared tissue.

once it has subsided it can be controlled with regular turn out, low protien food, possible removal of back shoes and also bandaging.. oh and also bute if required

cold hose him morning and night but some witch hazel cream on his legs give him 3 arinica tablets morning and night for 3 days bandge them up over night if that dont work call the vet. make sure he is on a deep bed that covers all the stable!
