Can you send him awa ot be started woth ridden work and hacking.
Then look for a riding companion- is he keot at home , wiht you alone, wiht other horses or on a yard?

i had this very problem last year. although i am on a yard everyone else was busy. i just had to wait until they were around and beg them!!! do u not have any horsey friends that could spare an hour or so a week?

[/ QUOTE ] no im not on a yard i only got my horses on stabling and grazing and its in the middle of nowhere i also dont know anyone around me that has horses its all farmland

I had that prob too - I walked her out and long reined her on the roads for abt three/four months before taking her out. When I did start riding her out I lunged her first then only took her out for 10 - 15mins at the time then built it up. It was a bit scarey at first but she's turned into a horse that can be hacked out alone no probs

there must be a good local instructor you could have to help you for the first few ridden sessions?
i have broken in quite a few with just unhorsey OH there, to pick up the pieces if necessary.
ditto, have got them going on the roads with OH on bike with hi-viz jkt. i wouldn't do this on busy roads, but on quiet roads it's been fine.

Does he load, what about boxing him and taking him some where more suitable, maybe theres a yard nearby with someone prepared to go with you if you do the leg work.

Also bear in mind that generally if you do your homework with them at the yard well and maybe lunge to tire them out before you take them out the yard, youngsters are often much better behaved than you think they will be! Often theyre just glad to get out and about! maybe get hold of a dually Monty Roberts headcollar for a bit of extra control.

Do bear in mind though, a tired stressy horse is worse than a calm one who knows what you're asking it... training at home will definitely help, try to teach it to stay on the aids for when you go out there. Bless you.

Even though you are not riding I'd get a good instructor who will be able to help you to teach him and hopefully give him some confidence. Alternatively, move to a yard where there are more people and horses.

Maybe it would be a good idea to move yards, to somewhere that has facilities and possible help for a couple of years until broken etc.

If your on a busy road to start with it could be quite dangerous to try and hold him on your own. On another yard there may be cars coming and going within the premises that would help to start with, before venturing out onto the open road, someone may have a horse that they will be willing to help as well by nannying him on the road if it is a quite bomb proof one obviously.

I'd search around and look for a yard that has menages and help on hand if needed.

Why don't you advertise for some help? Even if it's just a dog walker or someone whose prepared to come along on a bicycle.

I've arranged for my friends' kids to come out with me, to chat and keep me company and to ring forward should I fall off and the filly runs away!

Also, I've arranged to pay a trusted friend to come down several evenings a week for the first few times we go out, as she'll know what to do in the event of anything scary happening.

Finally, I've been offered that my filly can go and stay at my friends' place for the first month of me backing her so I can ride with someone every evening.

It'll all require a fair bit of forward planning and a bit of money but it'll be well spent and I'm now looking forward ot breaking my filly in, whereas before I was dreading it!
