hi my daughters 23yr old shetland who is still in light work came in from the field today as usual, he had a handfull of alfa lite with a sprinkle of garlic in it, had one bite then it was like he was gasping for air, he was hunching his back and there was signs of colic, he then started coughing up like a brown mucus phlem stuff, he then passed 3 lots of droppings that seemed normal, i called the vet as he was sweating and seemed a bit wobbly by the time the vet rang e back he had calmed down so she said she would come out if he was in distress which he wasnt and to keep a eye on him, he then seeed to return to his normal self, ive took him for a walk out in hand tonight and he seemed fine walking along as usual, should i insist the vet comes out or just keep a eye on him as she suggested. xx

could he have got something stuck in his throat. was the hi fi dry.. i think if he is fine i would just keep a very close eye but if youre going to worry all night get them out. i suspect they would give him the once over and say keep an eye on him if he seems ok now,

Sounds like CHOKE, I have always found that all the chaffs need to be pretty wet when fed, especially to an older pony, I would just keep an eye on him. If it happens again and you think it's CHOKE just hold the head up and massage his throat and down front of neck to try and dislodge it.

hi sorry i forgot to put it was damp when i gave it him not dry or dusty he has had the same brand olso for the past 3 years without problems, it was the brown phlem stuff that was worrying more than anything x

Agree sounds very much like choke - wouldnt worry about the brown coloured stuff coming up - when they choke horrendous gunk can come down the nostrils out through the mouth etc. and looks very alarming.

I also have used the method described by Rouletterose many times and so long as it is reasonably firm I have always managed to help them dislodge whatever the problem is. Also had one elderliness mare who did this quite often despite all her food being wetted down.

thanks so much guys i feel a bit better now its just very upsetting to watch my poor daughter thaught he was a gonner too x

Defo sounds like choke. Especially the way you describe the coughing and the phelm. Although you soak the "chaff" you may need to put something else in the feed to make him chew (sounds like he is bolting his food, without chewing). Have you thought about putting a handful of pony nuts in, or some apples/carrots chopped up?

yeah he usually has a bit of something different each day but today he just had the chaff so im hoping it was just that and we dont have a regular occurance going on x

A wee bit of oil in the chaff could help...the cheapy sunflower oil from supermarket is fab for mixing in feeds! Hugs to you and daughter....choke is horrible to see
