Hi guys,

We have decided to expand our show team by one member. I have convinced my friend that a quality miniture horse would be a really good investment.

I have loved these ponies since little inky came on HHO and he is so adorable!

I just wondered if there is anything I should know about them that is different to the others we already have!
We have a shetland 3 pb welsh a's a part bred welsh a a welsh b and a newfy.
And how much would you expect to pay for a quality one?

I just produce ponies i dont sell them! (even if thats the whole idea!) selling gets left to someone else!

Just to clarify this pony would not be a project it would be a long term resident we just feel a mini is what we need in outr lives!

I have two minature falabellas that I have shown, no real problems other than the normal horsey stuff be very careful who you buy from ! I would get in touch with a minature society first

there is a stud of them at the end of our road! fields full of them and their unbelievably tiny weeny foals - i will see if she has a website when i run past later - i really dont know much about her or the ponies as i havnt been here long but i do know they are from America originally - the horses not her she is from Bath!

As you are in my part of the world, there is a lady just outside Diss that breeds Falabellas. She usually advertises in the Adtrader - might be worth having a look.

It doesnt have to be registered with the BMHS to show.

It depends on what you intend to do with your miniature really. Here are a few pointers and you can PM me for more should you wish!!!

Registered Miniature horses usually fall under one or more of the following societies..

1. British miniature horse society ( BMHS )

BMHS

2. International Miniature horse and pony society ( IMHPS )

IMHPS ( IMHPS )

3. International Falabella Society ( IFMHS )

IFMHS

4. American miniature Horse Society

AMHA

Now you can obviously have partbred miniatures i.e. part bred American ( Dam/Sire one American one British )

Most of these societies are very specific about what horses can be registered under their society except IMHPS that will accept almost any miniature as long as it is not over the height limit.

Depending on how serious you want to show or how far you want to get will depend on what "type" of miniature you go for. For example Only BMHS registered horses can qualify for Royal International and the HOYS. No other societies are elligable to qualify. The IMHPS however do their own version of HOYS called Mini HOYS. This in itself is a prestigious event for minaiture horses and you have to qualify to enter.

There are also diffent "types" of miniature as in you can get "refined" ones i.e. arab or TB like, "hunter type" "cob type" and "Draft type" they are all miniature if they fall under 34" ( some societies hold classes for the cat b miniatures 34" - 38" and 38" to 42" )

Now also depending on how serious in showing you are will depict the price. You can pay from a couple of hundred pounds to several thousands depending on registration/ breeding and previous achievements.

Before you buy any miniature i would seriously look into them before you purchase. Choose a reputable dealer and make sure you are 100% sure on what type/ registration/ breeding you want. It would be awful to spend thousands and not be able to show it as you cant get it registered under the correct society.

If you want to PM what you intend to do with your miniature and your budget i will happily recommend what you should be looking for!!!

One thing i will say is they do need proper care. I have 5 strand electric fencing and even rugs etc cost more than "big" sizes!!

To show minaiture horses need to be clipped and that is a job in itself when you are doing it before every show!

Here are a few more societies that you can also show under too..

MHCGB

EMHA

IMHR

If you want to see more about what they are like why not visit MHOYS on 4th and 5th October at Arena Uk.

Hope this helps!!
