Hi all

big spotty pony has been on box rest for 5 months now due to lami ( had us and vet confused as he lost loads of weight from when we bought him) anyhoo he came sound in the box and slowly coming off painkillers started walking out 5 mins a day abit of jumping about n things n went very lame again so back on painkillers n box rest i personaly think hes bruised himself leaping about

my concern is i was playing with his feet tonight n notice his hoof is splitting away from his coronet band will be contacting the vet on monday anyway but i was wondering if anyone has any experiance with this good or bad?

I really am feeling like a losing battled but hes the nicest most loving horse u could ever meet what needs to be done will be done but im not giving up yet
 
No experience, but if it was me I'd be calling vet tomorrow rather than waiting until Monday. Fingers crossed for you x
 
Ditto Nari. The most hopeful thought is that what you're seeing could be an abscess, bursting through the coronary band but with the history it could be much more serious I fear.
 
Thank you we will have a further chat about calling vet tomow trying to upload a pic but proving difficult it looks like just above the split there is brand new hoof there bloody horses worry me crazy but cant live with out them
 
I saw this thread earlier but don't have the knowledge/experience to provide much in the way of useful advice. The only thing that occurred to me was could you get advice from your farrier?

I hope it turns out well.
 
Will be sending pics to him tomow n hopefully talking to him he is comfortable and happy atm on his painkillers i do hope its bursing wich made him lame again he is the happiest soul in his stable strange but im happy he isnt stressed
 
I have a mare that has a very similar sounding complaint. Every few months a gap appears between the top of the hoof wall and the coronet band with a bulge of what looks like soft new hoof behind. It is tender for a couple of days but she is sound unless worked in trot on the roads ( so we don't so this ). This has been going on for a couple of years now ( since we moved ) and has caused no problems.

The gap just grows down in the form of a ridge on the hoof but it is very shallow and can be rasped off and does not affect the strength of the hoof or longevity of shoes at all. She has been seen by 2 farriers and an equine vet none of whom have seen anything like it before. The general consensus of opinion is that it doesn't cause a problem so don't worry about it. It is probably caused by something lacking in the grazing or she is intolerant to something but none of our other horses are affected. She's special!!

The vet suggested Limestone flour and micronised linseed and since she has been on these the problem is less frequent. It does cause a stir when we are out in public sometimes though.

im hoping its a good sign of new hoof growing finally as he hasnt grown foot or tail in 8 months n started growing it now since being on vit supplement started 2-3 months ago
 
Ohh gosh poor you. Hopefully just a foot abscess. This has happened to my horse due to abscess he is okay now but still in due to a massive hole in his foot. I would call the vet and see what they say poor you xxx
 
Laminitis means inflammation of the laminae. You need to reduce the inflammation. Another sign is a poor blood supply to the hoof, causing cracks (like the one you have) I have a mare that although does not have Laminitis did have large cracks in her front hooves. These were due to damage to the fetlock area (untreated large cuts by the previous owner)

You can see the crack on the lower part.
Due to her having Navicular I started her on NavX gold from Hilton Herbs. Bedford I finished the first litre the cracks had gone. I have continues to use it and have now added the Turmeric Mixture (Turmeric,Ground Pepper "freshly ground at the time of using it", and either Coconut Oil, Olive Oil or Linseed Oil) . Her hooves are great and she has good strong feet.
Look at using Either the NavX Gold or the Turmeric Mix or both.
