Has anyone tried a copper or magnetic band on their horses for Arthritis? I have a 9hh shetland (10 years old) which is my grandsons who i purchased a few months ago for £500 plus tack etc, for the price i paid i never had her vetted as I see her daughter riding her around and she was fine, had her delivered the following week and within a few days she was limping :( i had the vet out to microchip her and mentioned it and she said give her some bute and shut her off for a week and i will come back. done that and the lameness was gone but back out with the horses and in the cold it come back. to cut a long story short xrays was taken which never showed much but the vet is sure its arthritis in the short pastern and to give her bute which i have done but she can't live on it so i turned to Helios Pharmacy who have given me Rhus Tox for her to take for 10 days, we are on 7 days and i have seen no difference. Basically I need your help or advise on what to try now please. I have 5 more horses and 2 are very mature but never had this problem.

Devils claw is a good substitute for bute with arthritis. Have seen it work wonders if they need to be kept working to stop them seizing up.

Sorry, cant help with the magnetic band etc but there's plenty of different stuff out there for that purpose. Eg boots, rugs, etc. If it were me i would give it a go.

Thanks I will give devils claw a go as my mate has some I can try, problem is she is only used the weekends if the weather is good as my grandson is only 2 so does not do wet weather riding just yet but i could take her for a walk each day round the block, she does have 10 acres to play in as well. thanks for your help :)

Turmeric is supposed to be helping lots of horses with arthritis, it is a cheap alternative too. There are also things like boswellia and devils claw and magnetic boots that are said to help.

A second opinion might be worthwhile, I got one when my pony was diagnosed with bone spavins which I doubted, I had a second opinion and the vet found a sprained deep digital tendon.

Might be a long shot, but if she's on ten acres she couldn't have developed laminitis could she? It is unusual in just one foot, but not impossible and the vet missed it in mine too! (different vet by the way!)

I haven't yet tried magnetic bands but I know they have been successful for other members. My boy developed athritis over the last year and was also put on bute. I chose to inject his hocks with steroids rather than keep him on bute forever. The first set didn't do much to improve him but the second injections really helped him. They are very expensive (cost 1.5k with x-rays and vet calls etc) but insurance kicks in so it's not too bad. He has gone from being told we had to semi-retire him (he was only allowed to hack) and I've been told he can go back to full schooling, in fact everything bar jumping and lunging. I find giving him a supplement helps...I used to give him Cortaflex for many years which worked well until he got fairly bad...then I swapped him to NAF superflex which IMO works better. I keep him turned out as much as possible too.

No not lami, I have all mountain and moorlands and a fjord who i have to be bang on with the grass every year and get her in before she gets it and have been successful for 15 yrs now, i have the field in half at the moment, must admit i did think that at first but it is only one leg and the farrier would have noticed. thanks for your input :)

Ah, you'll be a dab hand at it then :D

I hope you find something that works for her and she can give your grandson many years of pleasure to come. :)

Hiya,

I am doing a survey on equine joint supplementation and the public's experience with using them for my dissertation. I think this is a very important area in need of research. There are hundreds of products currently in the market and I want to highlight the products that do work from the products that don't. Then try to isolate the specific ingredients from your results, to work out why the products that do work do!

If guys have any experiences at all with joint supplements, I would be super greatful, if you could complete my quick survey. You will be helping to remove products that don't work from the market.

Hi I am going through a similiar problem with my pony at the moment, she suddenly went lame just over a year ago, and after xrays I was told she had ripped all the ligaments in her knee and it was just a case of rest, she however never came sound, and after more xrays it showed that arthritis had not set in to this knee. I was given to options to either maintain her at a level with some bute so she could do some gentle work or have the steroid injection which carried a small risk of bringing on laminitis. I decidied against the injection and went with the bute. I am currently looking in to some kind of magnetic band or boot which could help her, but i have found a supplement that has done her wonders ( this is after trying so many you can get off the shelves in the shops which pretty much did nothing) its called premierflex plus and its from www.equineanswers.co.uk she still does come in slightly lame now and again when she has not really done much and on these occasions i just give her half a bute, she is now walk trot cantering in the school hacking out and even doing a bit of mounted games which is what she did before her injury, this supplement is definately worth a look , I hope this helps :)
