My horse after being in for a couple week because the horrible weather only managed to get lightly exercised, schooled her for 30 mins probebly on Monday she tyed up really madly and had to get vet out to give her injection and take bloods, she didnt pass any dark urine so didnt have to go into newmarket. Blood result showed up the enymes didnt go into the kidney but were in the blood and she got to have another blood test and she on box rest.

SHe looks fine, and i would really like to turn her out or light exercise she wound up becuase shes a fit hunter, what would you do?

Presumably your vet has already advised reducing starch/sugars in feed as much as possible, and replacing them with enough fat to meet his workload instead in the longer term?

And you'll have cut back feed while he's been doing no work?

Was listening to a talk by Richard Piercy about tying up the other night, and he was saying sometimes even 1 or 2 days rest can be enough to bring on tying-up. And he was suggesting that once the horse is comfortable enough to move, then even a little inhand walking out can be helpful.

He also said that vet schools used to advise students to wait til muscle enzymes came right back down before suggesting horses started work again, whereas now it is more generally accepted that the introduction of very gentle movement/work can be helpful before muscle enzymes return to normal.

You really need to follow your vet's advice, but don't be afraid to ask your vet lots of questions. This period of box rest will be tricky but careful management from now on should ensure minimal repeats. Try giving a snack ball filled with highfibre cubes at times of busy-ness to distract horse from what he'd rather be doing... e.g. turn-out time
There is lots of nutritional advice available - I kept an endurance horse fit on diet suitable for tying up. Talk to the feed company helplines but remember they'll recommend their own products. Tying up can be related to a problem with muscle using minerals eg Calcium or the way starch is stored in muscles. Best solution is to ENSURE your horse has good level of vitamins & minerals and feed a VERY low starch diet.
Also, keep your horse's muscles warm, warm up and cool down very carefully.
Good luck

Horse had to have second lot of blood tests these have come through clear. been back into light work since friday/ sat. Hasnt got much energy as in on fibre diet. ordered soem selinum supplement and vitamins. SLowely adding back her museli mix and oil doenst give her much energy and she was like a donkey yesturday. and shes being turned out in the day time as per normal. Doesnt help horse is a very fussy eater!

Thanks for the advise.
