ok so, i hack out with my friend or by myself more or less every night (weather permitting) we've never had any problems, maybe the odd spook, just the usual horsey upsets as i'm sure your all aware of, just recently.. maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago we was hacking out, my friends horse spooked at something & wouldn't go forward & when asked to go forward he just walked backwards into my horse, which yes is an issue but it didn't upset my horse or cause any more upsets thankfully. my problem is, i hacked out solo 2 days after & my horse has never walked backwards when upset, but of course he saw his pal do it the other day so he thought he'd test it on me!! little monkey, trouble is he reverses diagonally so his backside backs up into the middle of the road!! ive never had an issue with him apart from again little upsets. how can i stop him from stepping backwards into the road as it is very dangerous, roads by me arnt the quietest. is he going to do it all the time now hes seen his pal do it? :(

thank you in advance for any replies given :)

Having had similar 'testing' behaviour of late I have been advised to always carry my riding crop and do as Amymay said, little tap, growl and make him do it!

Just an idea, when he goes backwards are you able to turn him around (turning away from the road), walk a few paces and then turn around again and maybe trot for a few paces to distract him into doing what you want??

Does he do it on one particular part? If so, could you try leading him past that part and mounting him when it is safe? Or try trotting up to the bit he reverses at so he is thinking forward and will hopefully forget to reverse!
