Need some help/guidance/suggestions please!!!

I bought my horse (who was a 'challenge' to say the least) off a girl i have known all my life. Tbh, if i hadnt had him, i don't know where he would of ended up! But anyway, she wanted a confident giving cob to do a variety of activities with, so i helped her find one, the one she bought was the one i told her not to buy as he wouldn't be suitable so 5 weeks of owning him - he isnt suitable  x

I competed him for her on the weekend along side my horse and for a 15hh cob he flew round the 2ft 9 and 3ft really well, getting two double clears. I'd only ridden him once before as well when i helped her viewing.

In the warm up he was very hyped up, baring in mind he probably hasnt done anything for a year, competition wise, but is fit. He did 3 big bucks before going into the jump, purely from excitement, but i smacked him and kicked him on and he jumped lovely. He gets fizzed up at the anticipation of getting to the jump more than anything i think and i do think this is easy emough to fix.

Now, the owner paid reasonable money for him including tack etc (only 5 weeks ago) and she wants me to compete him, keep him at livery etc and sell him on her behalf. I would keep the money i make on him. What would he realistically be worth? This isnt advertising as i havent agreed to take him on or not. What would you do? X I think money can be made on him but as i've never had a cob, i know they can fetch good money but wouldnt know what exactly. I will hunt him, xc and team chase, SJ him until he is sold but would need him sold within 3 months really to make it worthwhile before costs stack up!

She has also had him on loooooads of grass which wouldnt of helped his hyper levels! Is there a market for livelier cobs? I dont think he'll ever be a plod but he's so good on the roads etc.

Thoughts please?

He sounds fantastic!! I have a cob x WB and she is way, way sharper that my daughters TB!! I would say that yes there is a market for him, down side is the time of year, and how quickly you can turn him around?? Good luck with it all and I hope that your friend listens to you for the next horse she buys herself, its no fun being over horsed, even if it is a cob x

Sounds smashing and just up my street...hence why i have one not unlike him too! Good on the roads too,...a good positive there.

I think the market aimed at would be for a competent person that ODE's,..sounds like he ticks all the boxes and this would suit him very much.

Agree with councillor in that it's 'that time of year' and you may not get what you want for him,..however a horse is worth as much as a buyer is prepared to pay goes the saying!

Thoughts/suggestions:.....Are there any EC's local to you that you can pop an advert up on their board perhaps...or feed merchants too as both of these get alot of horsey traffic through and he may just catch someone's eye! Look where the Pony Club folk hold their events and advertise him where they frequent too, incase there are competent teenagers come out of ponies and looking for something to go up onto. Just a couple of thoughts from me!

Good Luck with him....i'm surprised you're not tempted to keep hold of him yourself... these types are so much fun if all 3 disciplines are what you enjoy (coz i'll bet he'll do a half decent and correct dressage test too!).

I think a smart looking cob that has some athletic ability should fetch a decent amount, especially if you know his history, but the big question is is he safe to hack? I think most people wanting a cob to do comps really want something that is safe and sane but not ploddy or boring (the fine line we all want to meet) and at least he is a decent height so will appeal to a more adult or mother/daughter share sort of market.

He could fetch 4-5000 once you have done all those things with him, and if he is quality, safe and sane. But it depends on your area, time of year, his looks, temperament, age etc. At this time of year not so much.

He's 9 years old, done it all before but had a quiet year because where he came from (local-ish) had a lot of show cancelled which i believe as alot have been by me but i still managed to get out x

He's literally bombproof on the road, tractors, diggers, lorries, road works, dont faze him. to be fair, nothing fazes him but he is lively out and has bucked (3 times on sunday) but think its mainly down to excessive food! But like i said, he'll always be a lively cob. I am happy to compete him as it wont affect my horses as i can just enter them all but dont want it to affect me taking my lad hunting as i'd need to hunt the cob too. I think i'm more worried about it affecting my horses in any way, time wise or stopping my lad hunting.

I wouldnt want him myself as im more a TB X ID/warmblood kind of girl and even though i did like riding him on sunday as i didnt think id like riding a cob (think im slightly converted-but not enough!!lol)

What are the risks of me doing this? I would need to confirm who would pay for his livery, shoe-ing etc as i dont want to be stuck with him for 5 months and end up not making anything out of it as im not fussed by having an extra horse!! x
