Advise Taken

Similar to me then, I am considering moving my 2 back to the stables OH has built so I can have the little black thing, reckon I could probably get him for £400, but in reality I am loving the livery yard, there are actually nice people and the set up is really benefiting ben in his education... he went out in the field today, 2 mins straight galloping and bucking, but came in sound :D almost had my head off with his first buck :eek: But he was soooo happy to be out and not on box rest :D:D

Aww bless him, I'm glad he's sound and enjoying himself again :)

How about bringing your mare back to be with the little black thing, but leaving Ben at the yard for a little while?

Out of interest, how does 400 compare to the advertised price? I've never done the bargaining thing

He has been up for sale for quite some time and it's really not a good time of year to be selling horses... fingers crossed he will still be up for sale when you're ready :)

I hope you're right :D

I've just realised I've hijacked ANOTHER thread :o Sorry!

Once upon a time I would have strongly advised to avoid thoroughbreds/ex-racers as a first horse. Well, since that time, I have seen many ex-racers come through our yard with owners with various levels of experience, and every single ex-racer at our yard has made me eat my words! :o

Funnily enough, all the ex-racers are the most placid, laid back, and dare I say it, lazy to ride horses at our yard! They put all of the native/cob types to shame and show them up. The native/cob types are all full of it, and the thoroughbreds plod round like sea side donkeys LOL! :D

There is the one exception mind.... A friend of mine events and has her horses at home. She bought in some ex-racers to produce as eventers. She had a really placid gelding that didn't have it him - he was a great horse, but more towards lower level competition. Then she had a quirky mare with a lot of attitude.

We took the two ex-racers cross country schooling, I warmed in the gelding whilst she rode the mare. We swapped, I cooled off the mare as she rode the gelding. Disaster stuck. Freak accident - the mare reared over backwards and landed on me. I sat up, my foot was facing the wrong way!

Turned out I had severely broke my ankle, quartering my talus and my fibula had snapped out of my skin! I had two operations, and temporarily wheel chair bound, being unable to walk for a year. It doesn't end there, but I won't go on, otherwise we will be here all night!

Anyway, whether it be a thoroughbred or a cob type - horses are horses - you will know what is right for you, and more importantly, what to AVOID!! ;p xx

he's up for 500, down 'ere in Cornwall, you HAVE to barter!! If I bring Eb's back I risk the whole 'is she/Isn't she pregnant thing! I could put him in with ben there but not her! There is also a woman who has 2 horses there, she rents a house from OH and the stables are across the road... she is just about the most irritating person you have ever met, way too uber helpful! She doesn't processes the word 'NO!!!!!' just couldn't deal with her, with my crown jewel ebs or any youngster, I would probably kill her and I'm quite placid.

I agree with minkymo, whatever horse you think you can cope with and love , is right for you.

I had a TB for 20 years, from when I was 17, and I truley believe they are what you make them.

So good luck , and most of all do not wrap any horse up in Cotten wool :) even the most pampered TB will than you for that x

Interesting... So a grand wouldn't be an outrageous offer for a £1200 lad?

Oh, he's not gelded? Yes, you don't need that kind of stress again

She's at the stables at your place  Sounds awful - I can't stand people like that   Mind you, I'm antisocial - I have a private rent little mini yard just for mine, I can't stand being around people :D

If you ever need any help disposing of bodies... ;) - payback for the fact that I will blame you for all the thread hijacking lately! :D

No! You CANNOT put us all through that again! I was kind last time ... I have the capability of turning into a dragon at times though ;):D:mad:

I saw you correct someone in the most tactful way on another thread recently ("ah, it's not quite how you've written it... *corrects everything in previous post*). I was impressed. It's a skill I don't understand  I'd be fascinated to see dragon mode!

You offer £800. They refuse but counter offer at somewhere around £1100, you say £900, they say they'll meet you in the middle = £1000. Voila!

Blimey - you'd start as low as £800? I don't know the ettiquette in these things - wouldn't want to offend anyone :o

Lol! It's an age thing I think. The older you get the more patience you acquire :) Plus on here it's easier to just click on the red X and go away when someone starts to bug you. In real life I'm pretty mellow but when someones actions directly affect me they will be made aware! :D

I think £800 would be fair enough, it has been for sale for a while and it's a rubbish time of year for selling.. and yearlings seem to go for even less than foalies.

Thanks rhino (and SF) that's really useful... :)

SF, I find the more annoyed I am, the more compelled I am to stay and argue it out  Anger management problems, anyone? Some people definitely were nearer the front of the queue when they were handing out tact ;)

PMSL: you kill her, I will buy ponio for you and keep it at the stables for free, you can take the body up to yours and find some pigs to feed it to, she is possibly the most well meaning person in the world but it is soooo grating!!! My friend needed stables for her 2 wild youngsters and despited being told very firmly that she was not to go near them under any circumstances her sodding response was... I will check them in the morning and make sure they have hay and water!!!! Gagh!!!! I will kill her, I do not want another horse THAT much!,

1200 down to 1000 is not that bad, I would be offering 900 if its been on the market that long, you can always settle on 1K then, but just hope they don't go on here! They won 't budge on 1200 if they know how much you want it :D

No! You CANNOT put us all through that again! I was kind last time ... I have the capability of turning into a dragon at times though ;):D:mad:

PMSL...AGAIN!! I would never do that to her intentionally :D I would have loved her baby to bits, but didn't want to miss a day with her, thats why I purchased ben. No way would I pop her in with a boy with all his Kahunahs :D:D I am loving being back on her back again, we did jumping today on our hack, being on her is being alive, wouldn't give a day of that up for the world :D:D:D

Absolutely! They've advertised at £1200 which to me says they want to get £1000 out of the deal, and they will if they are experienced sellers. We all know the drill ;) 3 years ago I bought a young mare from abroad. Lovely horse that I had viewed online and continued to keep going back to the advert over the period of a month. I really wanted this horse but I was not prepared to pay their asking price (£5k). I had email conversations going with the seller and in one of my last emails I said I would make an offer but they would not like the offer I was going to make. The seller told me to make it. I did, £900. She accepted. Mind you it cost me double that to import the horse but she's been well worth it :)

all i would say is if any go for a flat racer as the jumpers are a pain to get out of their habbit of galloping at jumps and they quite often go a bit nutty when they see them :o my friend used to always have ex racers and she used to just potter about on them and all of them were very nice horses but there are exceptions and some are harder to train then others

Wow. Now that is impressive

Haha, shame you're on the opposite side of the country - I'd happily come over for a "hit man's holiday" :D But it would cost a fortune to bring the wee man down there :p still, I'm sure we could come to some arrangement ;) :D I think with an interfering attitude like that, she's asking for it. That's defensible in court, right?

Awww, I love that feeling. I love my 5 year old to bits, but he has never given me that feeling the way my old cob does :o You definitely need to keep her safe from these sex pest ponies and not let it happen again :D

:D:D:D

Any horse you buy, whether foal/ex-racer or some other, you have to realise they are a full time commitment 24/7 and cost more money than you earn. But I'm worried that you have gone from wanting a foal(sensible) to ex-racer,are you really sure what you really want.

Some have said that I shouldn't fixate on a certain breed, don't worry ^^ I'm not! I'll look at plenty of ex racers who need a home and if I don't find anything good, I'll go else where :) I honestly like too many breeds to pick just one! I'll see what's out there when the time comes and shop around.

Echo Bravo: I realise it's full time commitment and I'll need more money :) I'm not allowing myself to even look (Unless it's for research) at horses for sale untill I know I can totally do it. I know the heartbreak of not being prepared and having to sell, it happened to a good friend of mine. She still hates herself for relying on her boyfriend to pay for it and when he left her...the horse had to go. She had put a huge amount of work in and turned a psycho mare into a dream. I had to go to viewings with her :( it was awful.

Anyway, I'd rather be at a yard, knee deep in mud and snow, at 5am, than out partying and wasting money on alcohol (Don't drink...ever!!)

Well said! I know what you mean! Hey, some day (soon!) we'll both be in that position.. once I am in secure employment, have paid off some of my student debt then I too will be on the hunt for a horsy friend.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing you posting in the future with pics of your new boy or girl, sounds like whatever horse you get is gonna have the life of it, seeing as you are putting so much thought into preparing for it both practically and financially. I think you're going to make some little horse very happy!

This really made my day :) I'm feeling ill and all my limbs ache! Turns out Llewellyn was stronger than I thought and I pulled muscles in my arms XD doesn't help with a raging cold! Going out for a chinese buffet soon too, yumm! (Courtesy of my brother, who just made it in the top 3 of the go-carting championships!)

Thank you :)

Hi Annie - if you're serious about an ex-racer, perhaps you should talk to some of the racehorse rehoming charities? I know they don't always 'sell' the horses on, more like a permanent loan, BUT they have a huge amount of knowledge and are always there for support and advice, plus they encourage you to take as much time as you need to make sure that you are matched with the right horse. I'd be inclined to go that route if you can, rather than buying one from an advert. If you're buying one privately, you would have to factor in the cost of the vetting etc, whereas with a rehomed horse, at least you will know that they have had decent vets and farriers crawling all over them before they are ready. Just a thought! Good luck :)

Agree on the rehoming charities. I will say though, that just because you dont have a huge amount of money doesnt mean you would have to limit your search to racehorses or youngstock. There are some wonderful horses out there and it sounds like you are offering a nice loving home which is worth more than money to a lot of buyers. My boy was a touch over £1000, he is neither an exracer or foal ;) he is a 6yo Warmblood out of Landgraf/ladykiller lines, nothing wrong with him - right place right time I guess.
