I'm looking for some help from all you dressage aficionados out there! I'm hoping to register BD this year with my new mare after me having a few years off competing, My instructor has advised me to register BD and do the affiliated sections as the judges are 'more consistent' (her words) in what they're looking for, however looking at the website its all change and none of it bears any resemblance to what I remember from a few years back, and I can't make head nor tail of what I, or the horse need to be registered as!! We're only looking at doing Prelim and the horse has no points, do I and she need to be fully registered, or associate, and whats the difference in gold, silver and bronze? I have read, and re-read the website but its just SO confusing!! Also the horse came over from Ireland as a three year old, does this make her 'imported', sorry if that's a stupid question, its just the term imported conjures up images of glossy warmbloods!!

Thanks in advance for any advice

Oooh, so glad you posted this, I've been trying to understand the same thing all weekend,! The more I read, the more confused I become!! (And my instructor said exactly the same thing, and my horse is also Irish, came over as a 4 yo)

It depends on what you are aiming for and at what level! You can compete as a Quest member (you and horse) in Prelims but you need to be full members if you want to enter any of the areas/regionals and you can only enter some sections - if in doubt email BD as they are pretty good and most people are confused as hell with the new sections (or is that just me??!!)

At least we're not alone Uncle Max! I'd like to be able to at least have the opportunity to do areas or regionals, you never know!! Its the gold, silver and bronze that's most confusing. How the heck does anyone work out a) if they have the right membership to be eligible and b) which section they should then enter!! Time to email BD I guess.

I don't really understand it either and I've been a member for nearly a year! :p I think you need to be a fully paid member to do regionals. Both you and horse need to be registered. You'll be in bronze if you have no points. I don't know the rules regarding horses brought over from Ireland, I don't know anyone who's irish horse has had points allocated to them so perhaps it still counts as GB, or perhaps no-one bothers to disclose it!

You can qualify for areas as a quest member (horse needs to be registered associate), but if you want to enter the class and have the qualifying sheets you need to then become a full member :)

I'm usually an eventer and have just done my first winter BD membership so far from understanding it all. But just to add, if you enter the bronze section you can't qualify for regionals/nationals as they only run at silver and gold. You can get sheets for petplan areas, which run sections at bronze and silver.

A friend got caught out recently as assumed her qualifying scores at bronze would count towards regionals!

I'm just having a go at Elementary and have managed 6 sheets for petplans (so I think can go to 2 area festivals?!) and ready to get back out eventing and forget BD for a few months!

Oh and mine is Irish, they count as british - must not be considered comparable to the glossy warmbloods haha!

If you want to do Prelim regionals then you have to be a minimum of Silver (there are no Bronze or Gold classes for Prelim at the regional/nationals), and you have to be a full member (you and the horse) to qualify - this PDF is quite helpful http://www.britishdressage.co.uk/up... and winter regional championships 2016v3.pdf

If you want to do Area Festivals you can be Bronze - again another helpful PDF:
http://www.britishdressage.co.uk/up...13/How to Qualify for Area Festivals 2016.pdf

In that PDF it does say that if you want to compete in the Area Festival then you and the horse will need to be fully registered.

So basically if you want to affiliate and use your scores to count towards something, then easiest way forwards is to fully register yourself and the horse - go Bronze if you are aiming for Area Festivals, go Silver if you are aiming for Regionals.

I've just checked the rule book about the Irish/importing thing, this is taken direct from the rule book:
For the purpose of registration, horses foaled in Ireland are classified as British.

So you are fine there - no imported points required because the horse is Irish!

When you apply for your membership BD will confirm what sections you and the horse are eligible for (which should be Bronze/Silver Prelim), and they'll send you the rule book so you can enjoy that tome; but if you havent had a read already this is the link to the online rule book

Hope this helps!
