Its been a long search with a few failed vettings, but ive finally found my new horsey partner. I cant say how excited I am as its not been the easiest of years. I lost my 2 horses at the start of the year, with only 2 weeks apart. The first to old age and then my beautiful 6 year old to stifle OCD, which had as you can imagine, a huge effect on the whole family.

With great thanks to John Rodia (Yeguada Rodia) who has been such a fantastic help in all things PRE, I found my beautiful horse Coliseo at the Yeguada Maipe.

He isnt home yet, as waiting for John Parkers shared transport. Im based on the Kent / London borders, so if anyone has any names of a trainer with specialist knowledge of the baroque types (for supplementary training) that would be very appreciated.

Ive also kinda blown the entire budget on the purchase, so if there are any little pieces of must have equipment for this breed (bits? brushes? mane bags? solutions to keep greys clean? lol) that are relatively cheap then please pass it on too.

I hope you all like him! he has been bought primarily for dressage but then also for Le Trec. Im not sure if he will stay a stallion, as im not a breeder, but he does have lovely lines as do all the horses at the Maipe. The best thing is that we have seemed to click almost instantly, more so than any horse ive ever ridden (gush gush)

Oh and almost forgot! im really having trouble thinking of a pet / nickname for him, as Coliseo is a little bit of a mouth full!!! so far I think the front runner is Cole, but others have suggested Colin (not a chance lol) Cauliflower (LOL) Hugo (random) and Seo (sayo)

Any thoughts?

Thank you for reading and indulging me!

Love him.My cross bred Spanish is doing Le trec training right now, I am glad you plan to do some too.I used John Parker too.Wishing you all the best. And updates too!

I can't see the pics...bloody work computer.

Sounds lovely though......seems patience as bore the perfect partner.

Congrats

Wow what a horse he is amazing, its got to be Cole.

You should email Horse mag to cover your story and his arrival home he would make some cracking pictures

x

Ohhh swooonnnnn!!! He's stunning!! I'm afraid with the name I'm a traditional girl, so it's got to be Colin. :D :p

Hes gorgeous, congratulations :)

Do you have facilities to keep a stallion then? I would suggest as he will not be used for breeding that you get him gelded asap so he can live life as a ''normal'' horse :)

Coliseo's not that much of a mouthful - just 3 syllables! I'm sure you wouldn't hamper such a gorgeous horse with Cole or Colin, would you?

For sparkly whites, you need Cowboy Magic on hand and also Quic Silver shampoo.

Spanish horses are also fed rather differently to English ones (lot of grain, not much forage or turnout), so get good advice on how to transition the diet.

Good luck!

Amazing horsey :) congrats!!! I've bought a PRE 3 months ago and used JP tranport, they're great :) I found my boy to be fairly undemanding, the only few issues that might or might not be PRE-specific were:

1) finding the right saddle that fits - they're fairly different to most horses over here, had to go with a Wow competitor after all;
2) finding a bit that he does not shy away from - turned out to be a simple eggbut mullen mouth. They have a tendency to be too "polite" with the contact and bend behind/above the bit sometimes, which in dressage is a big issue.
3) cold weather! clearly they're not used to it - mine went very stiff in the last few days but all solved now with the help of a half wool numnah. Also needed a major number of rugs :/

apart from that mine is def a good doer, can't go barefoot as hooves are very brittle, what else... very friendly with other horses and really enjoys company. I think as PREs are so well behaved, gelding them is only for the sake of being able to turn them out in a herd.
Hope you have lots of fun with him, I found mine to be the perfect horse :) if you're ever down to Patchetts to compete, do pay us a visit :)

What a stunning horse? He is magnificent.

I am waiting for a horse to come over from the UK with Parkers in the next few days, so maybe your boy is going back on that lorry? Mine is a grey too though nothing like the stunning presence of yours.

Good luck with him, may you have many years of happy riding together.

re feeding mine gets turnout 4-8 h a day, ad lib hay (don't give them haylage, they're mad on it), 2 scoops of hi fi (just for bulk really) and 1 scoop of pony nuts a day. So far so good, I find him to be really unfussy at what to eat and def a good doer. They're normally not good with anything sugary and molassed. hope this helps!

Unfort I dont have a stable until Nov 1st, so ive had to state for delivery after that. Have you put some pictures on here? Id love to see them x x x

also, overreaching is quite normal for them - it's better to put on bell boots for TO :)

Great tip!!!! he pulled a shoe off when i first tried him lol

Saddle wise i have one of the newer wintecs (bought a month before the big horse broke down) so im hoping to get away with that, at least in the short term. Bit wise, my trainer advised a ported mullen, so ive bought a magic bit (yes I knwo they arent BD legal) to start with. He did try to get behind the contact at the beginning of my ride Monday, but after sending him forward became very nice in the hand. He is currently ridden in a french link loose ring.

Patchets! thats not too far so will deffo give you a shout when ready x

As for feed, he is currently on a mix of straw and alfalfa and 4 kilo's of hard feed so I was planning to continue the grain for a little while (just not as much) add some hifi and again give straw and hay (and ween off the straw slowly)

omg he is stuninngggggggggggggggggg. i really mean it love him. what bout collie as short name. i swear cant stop looking at him love the last photo too. when you get him we want more photos. hope travles safe. let us all know how it goes. good luck you have been through the mill and deserve him. omg i am inlove with your horse. long time since i seen a horse and just thought that.

also any blue shampoo's will keep him whiter than white.

We ride all of our Spanish horses back home in pelhams, with a single rommel rein on the bottom ring

Probably you would not get away with this in the UK ;)

I cant see the pics (work computer), but how about calling him Leo.

I use a plain happy mouth snaffle with my PRE.

Snuggy Hoods clothing keep them clean.

Dont feed him anything with sugar in if you can help it mine gets pasture mix and chaff and lots of hay.

Dont let your farrier change the shape of his feet, you'll prob need a wide fitting saddle for him, cant think of anything else at the moment. Had mine 5 years now.

PREs are awesome (if you get a good one) lethal if you get a difficult one!

Snuggy hood... check (hopefully it fits his huge neck)

Farrier... had advisory from vet to get a good one, so will pass on xrays

saddle... suspected wide due to the lack of wither, I havent tried a PRE in a saddle that fits properly (rear risers etc) so im looking forward to seeing how he goes.

Hopefully he is a good'n, seems to have a perfect temp so far x

Well, I can't see the pics either as works computer doesn't seem to want to show them - will have to wait and have a look when I get home! Good luck anyway!
