Only thing I can think to add to the other comments, is that you should get an Oster mane and tail brush or one of the cheaper Roma ones... DON'T go near his lovely mane and tail with anything else!

And I just have to re-iterate how utterly gorgeous he is :D

Oh - and I also wanted to add that the Maipe horses are some of the nicest I've dealt with, on the ground and under saddle :)

Have you met many Maipe horse's Simarillion? I would love to hear about any relations, my boy is Minero lined x
 
He is gorgeous! You are a very lucky lady! I wouldn't call him Colin though, he needs something Spanish! My Iberian x has a spanish stable name, which suits him, as he likes to show off and flounce about.
Peter Maddison-Greenwell's book is soooo helpful regarding Iberians. I didn;t intentionally go out and buy one, he was just the best horse I tried at the time and I had a whole heap of problems when I got him. They are not 'average' horses, as the book taught me. It also shows you how to plait them up correctly - I use a Spanish plait in mine when competing. You don;t EVER want to trim their manes. In summer I put lots of little plaits in mine's mane to stop him getting too hot.
He is a very good doer and needs minimum rugs.
I avoid molasses as mine gets very sharp, though he is part Luso. I am currently feeding Allen and Page and top-spec chaff. I avoid haylage and soak hay. Lami is a risk to them, mine wears a Greenguard in our (very rich) pasture. As he is UK bred he is used to turnout and hates being in.
Mine pulls shoes off left right and centre so we are 'trialling' barefoot at the mo.
Best shampoo I have tried is Wahl Diamond White.
BAPSH website is very helpful.
I use a MW Falcon saddle, and a french link loose ring snaffle with a flash.
 
He's gorgeous!!!! I think it's horses for courses, my Luso is fed molasses no problem and is barefoot behind without any issue. Would agree that they are difficult in terms of saddles. My wintec was no where close to fitting him. I had an Albion legend on him as a 4 yo which he out grew by 6, so then a lovely Strada dressage saddle which he again outgrew and eventually had one made.
JP are excellent for transport.
Iberians can be prone to Lami, so I'd introduce him to TO before Spring comes.

I started in a pelham whilst we were getting to know each other, as he was in some serious metalwork in Spain. Soon was able to get him in a NS loose ring training snaffle which we do everything in including xc.

I would probably call him Colin, but then mine has mostly ended up being called Trev.

I finally got my boy in the summer. He was bred by John Rodia, and his mum and dad are from Yeguada Maipe. Dad is Sonajero XII and mum is Maga VI.

Mine originally came over from Spain last year, so he has had a bit of time to get used to things. He is very laid back but eats absolutely everything. I've not had any problems with sugar and he is fed cool mix and hifi.

No problems with turnout - Trev doesn't tend to run around much, he mostly just eats. I'm also fortunate in that he doesn't seem to like mud much (touch wood) so stays pretty clean.

Can't think of anything specific to buy apart from lots of Canter or something similar for his mane. In terms of a saddle, mine was actually narrower than you would think from looking at him. I thought he would be a wide, but he's actually more of a medium-wide.

Not really many - I breifly worked at a dealer's yard over here, and she imported Spanish horses to sell. She had a lot of Ovelar geldings, who were stunning to look at but some of them were far too sensitive - one of them, who I actually managed to help sell for a large sum of money, was the hottest little fireball I've ever sat on! I thought my instructor's Luso stallion was hot but this little guy was something else! Though still incredibly safe with it - he was sold to a novice rider to become her reining horse!

I remember she had a few Maipe horses, one in particular was a lovely big dark boy, and they were all easier to do than the Ovelar boys - less quirky. I remember my boss saying something along the lines of she'd import more Maipe horses if she could afford to do so, rather than the others, as they were the nicest she'd come across.

It was really only a brief encounter, and personally I'll definitely look into Maipe horses once I'm finally in a position to buy. Yours is a stunning example of a Maipe-bred, I hope you enjoy him :)
 
I love Maipe horses- stunning creatures. A fantastic PRE breeder. Looking forward to seeing lots more pics of him when he arrives.
 
I spoke to JP's last night and they are indeed leaving today and will bring him on the way back, so it will be about 9 days time!!!!!!!

lovely horse and I would call him "Colly".

one of my late horses was called Columbus and we shortened it to Colly for years. It was a lovely friendly name.
 
He's a lovely boy. I thought Leo too! All mine are barefoot and have good feet. They are on hay and I don't feed anything with sugar in. Mine that came from Spain do feel the cold and hate the rain. I have two Ideal saddles for one of my stallions and they seem to fit well. Don't let your farrier drop his heels low, as it does cause problems with tendons and ligaments having too much strain put on them by the different angle. You'll probably have to stay with him to reassure him when you start turning him out, as they can panic. They don't have much tolerance to midges, so a fly rug would be a good idea next year. The stallions do strike out with their front feet sometimes. It isn't usually aimed at you though, but can be painful if you get in the way! I've found ASDA purple shampoo is brilliant for grey horses and it only costs 85p!

I haven't had a chance to read through all the replies, but I like the name Collie. My mum had a horse with this name and he was gorgeous too!
 
Well my PRE (had him since he was 4.5) has been in a Wintec Isabel happily until now (7) - we are changing now.

I feed him haylage and he's doing very well on it. VERY good doer - watch the spring/autumn grass as they can get fat fast. Hardy to the cold - we've had some seriously cold temps here - and he actually managed to come out of winter fat!!! Apparently, they can be susceptible to laminitis.

My horse is very sensitve to flies and often has a bad reaction to bites. I've been told this can be an issue as of course they haven't evolved with immunity to our insect life. So, he's fully rugged in itchy season and on brewer's yeast all year round.

He's in a Sprenger bit - forget the name of it - kind of a loose ring french link. My horse does have a fairly low palate (might just be him rather than the breed).

Very late maturing - looked quite "odd" until this year really when suddenly he's filled out and looks like a real PRE!

INCREDIBLY clever - watch people don't pet him too much because of them being so people friendly, as I found mine got a bit bargy. So, have to really keep the boundaries I feel as they are quick to exploit.

Absoluetly adore mine - not an easy horse if I'm honest, but incredibly rewarding with an amazing personality.
